Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

After d-link kindly (??) pointed me at the latest beta firmware and i installed it i now have a bricked 313...No...never...not the experts at d-link..I hear you shout.
Well now i am waiting for a new drive and i thought that it would be an idea (as it has to go back and it's knackered anyway) to see if it can be restored...
Any ideas..oh and BTW i ain't no penguin head so keep it simple...

Where did you find this nice (!) beta software and what issues is it supposed to address?
I suppose you already tried to restore to factory settings, as pointed out in the documentation?

I have just received a new firmware, designed to fix a different issue (related to the bundled Memeo backup software). If you wish to try this, you can download it from
ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dlinktemp/DNS-313_01b05_BETA
Please note: this is still considered beta software, and using it may yield unexpected results. If you do want to try it, we would be interested to hear whether it did fix your problem, so we can provide feedback to the software engineer.

They *SHOULD* have removed the file by now...
Worst of it was i don't even use the Memeo software...when the unit restarted no response..no power lights..no network light..and the fan running full tilt
*sigh*

Same here - also flashed my DNS-313 with 1.01b05 firmware (via web interface, file size 12113920 bytes). It flashed correctly and asked for reboot. Didn't hear from my box since then
Contacted D-Link service centre for help. Maybe it's possible to boot it via TFTP, even without the bootloader working correctly?

Serial port is probably need for recovery from bad firmware update. If boot loader has network support then it might be possible to recover over network.
Maybe returning your device to warranty would be best option.

@lothalev - Hope you got yours replaced - d-link did RMA mine and replacement came after 2 days
I did tell them to remove it as soon as i had bricked mine -
@sala - how dod you go about a recovery via network?? nothing from the box (and since they haven't asked for the old one back ...yet) i have one that i can play with ;-0
When you start up the drive the fans spin, but no other response what so ever, also the only way to shut down is disconnect the power..??
Any further info would be appreciated as i have nothing to lose.
#Finally - does anyone have a copy of the original firmware or can you extract it...if i am going to try and re-flash then having some to flash with would be a good idea...lol
thanks all

Try to connect drive using USB and then delete the partions using disc tool in vista/xp and then connecting to ethernet again and run direct click and connect. This worked with my unit that didn't respond.

If the unit is "bricked" (eg. no lights, no response to power button), the USB / Ethernet connections also fail to work.
So it is not possible to get to the partitions on the disk, other than take it out and connect it directly to a PC motherboard...

The most notorious method is method used for wrt54g's and compatible devices. You can find more info at openwrt wiki. But it is very unlikely that dns313 has same kind of method available.
Very high likely your recovery process could look like this one here http://dns323.kood.org/dsmg600/howto:recover

I just got a brand new DNS-313. D-Link support didn't manage to repair my bricked unit, so they sent me a new one. Nice...
Managed to upgrade its firmware to newest, now official, 1.01
Still problems with file transfer, though. And FTP got somehow more broken than before
Power management is also absent in 1.01 - DLink promised it in 1.02
