General Questions regarding DNS-313

Hi all,
before buying DNS313, i thought it might be a good option to ask some general questions:

1) what are the general obstacles\shoals when using this device? For example i heard that for 323 u have to format the drives after firmware upgrade. now, that might be not really comfortable with 313, as it has only 1 hdd
2) what about torrents? on the official page there is nothing about torrents support, but as i can see - some people do use it.
3) is it loud?
4) your general opinion smile

thanks in advance,

Re: General Questions regarding DNS-313

Hi,

1) The 313 do formats the hard drive you insert in during installation. I've also heard that it does when installing a new firmware but I don't know for sure.

2) I think there is other post in this forum explaining it.

3) Although I have the 313 just since a few days ago, I can tell you it is not noisy. The fan is not, in fact you can hear the hard drive over the fan. The issue here is that it never spins down, at least with firmware 1.00. By the way, it doesn't get hot.

4) Very satisfied! The transfer rate is fantastic: about 20/MBs for reading and writing, besides I have cat 5 cables of bad quality - something I must fix.

Re: General Questions regarding DNS-313

Hi whats up I'm also thinking about purchasing the DNS-313. Does anyone want to give it a thumbs up.

Does it essentialy have the same feature set as its big brother the DNS-323?

Also I would like to hear other users opinions on the fan... How audible is the fan and does it spin down when the drive is idle? I am thinking of using a low power hard drive like the WD Caviar GP 500GB WD5000AACS and hope the cooling fan will not have to spin up..

I couldn't see any support pages for the DNS-313 on Dlink's site. So can you tell me if there are any known bugs with this device?

Re: General Questions regarding DNS-313

I would say the fan is LOUD, but what could you expect from a 1.5" fan running at full speed? I've got a Samsung 500GB drive to have it as silent as possible, but the heat dissipating from the drive keeps the fan busy a couple of times per hour. Every time the fan starts I faultly think that it's the laser printer that's starting to print! I've even got the front of to get it better ventilated, but as long as they can't fix the sleep mode it will be like this.

Re: General Questions regarding DNS-313

Hi,

a comment on what is said earlier:
- I upgraded the firmware to 1.01b06 and did NOT have to reformat the drive.
(I did not try b11 yet)

Personally I've good experience of the box AFTER I added mediatomb as the UPnP-server.
I use it with a Seagate 750GB 7200.11 for storing all my S-VHS-tapes converted to MPEG2.

The original D-Link version of UPnP (in 1.00 and 1.01b06) seems to count position in the file using 32-bits integer,
i.e. all files are truncated, a MPEG2 of 6-8Mbps will be stopped after an hour.
Adding Mediatomb is a simple operation, you add the package to your user-partition of the harddisk, and add some fun_plug scrips.
How-to-hints are in a parallel tread. Probably you need to have some basic linux/unix command-familarity, and have a tool compatible with gnu tar
(eg a Linux box or winzip).

I use Dlink DSM-520 as a client connected to my TV-monitor.
