Newbie DNS-313 Owner

I have just received a DNS-313 and installed a 500gb WD Cavair SE16 HDD.  I have run the installation cd-rom but it failed to map the drive on completion.  By running the Easy Searcher application can find the drive but when I try to map it this way it gives me a 'Failed to Map Drive' error each time.  Dlink support suggested mapping it manually but following their instructions I still can't find the drive.  Probably a simple error on my behalf but any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

Hi misterdun, please describe your network setup. Is the dns connected to a router/switch/etc...? Your pc get its ip address from this router/switch/etc.. through dhcp?

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

Its connected to a router via an ethernet connection.  I believe it gets its IP address through dhcp but this is all a bit alien to me.

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

If you open a new explorer window and go to \\ipAsShownInEastSearch\ or \\ipAsShownInEastSearch\Volume_1 what happens?

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

The windows firewall SHOULD not block connections to smb shares.... but who knows ... why don't you try to map the drive with the firewall disabled?
If nothing changes, the situation is really weird... box &pc on the same subnet, the box get a valid ip, the easy search discover the unit, windows (even without firewall) is unable to map it...

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

No I still can't fin it with Firewall turned off.  The device and hdd are recognised when attached via usb2 so everything is working fine.  Do I need to open any ports or allow sharing anywhere?

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

You might check if you have the protocol for file and printer sharing installed on your network device...it's improbable that it has been deinstalled but it may be worth a check.
Another thing i would look at is if the workgroup of your windows system and of the dns 313 is the same.
Are you sure that the ip configuration is correct ? I didn't see you posting the ip address of the drive.
You can open a cmd window on the windows pc and execute ipconfig /all and post the output here. If possible try to find out the ip number of the dns 313 and post it also.

The IP address of the dns is 192.168.1.57, I can configure the device through the Web GUI.  I have changed the dns workgroup to the same as my  windows system.  Here is the output of the ipconfig:

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

Hmm, the network configuration is ok, please check your network device in the device manager if it has the client for microsoft windows networks installed and the file and printer sharing for microsoft windows networks. You should also check if you actually have a share defined in the web gui under configuration=>advanced=>network access.

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

I do have a share defined in the configuration.  I am beginning to think the problem may be more to do with my router, I am (possibly rather foolishly) using a Wanadoo Crapbox, I mean Livebox and have been reading they are pigs to setup a network with.

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

To verify that the cause of the issue is the router you could connect the pc&dns directly using a crossover network cable.

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

Hi, sorry not responding, just got legend of zelda on the wii so have been distracted.  I now have a crossover network cable and have tried mapping but it doesn't even give me the option to map the drive in EasySearch.  Any pointers?

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

The ip addresses are configured correctly? (same subnet)
ie. if your box has still 192.168.1.57 as ip, have you configured the pc with a 192.168.1.whatever address (without the router there isn't any dhcp service on the network, you must configure statically the ip of your pc)?

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

Here are the results of ipconfig /all:

C:\>ipconfig /all

Windows IP Configuration

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

The network adapter of the pc switched to autoconfigure, as you can see the subnet of the dns and pc are different.

        Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.250.96
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0

Now you can take 2 way:
1- Change the dns ip, ie. configure 169.254.250.54 as ip and 255.255.0.0 as subnet
2- Change the pc ip. For this you must edit the properties of the tcp network in your lan network adapter

Maybe, the first is easiest.

I can only suggest to configure the pc with an ip on the same subnet of the dns... if even this don't work and your issue has not been fixed in recent firmware (i don't know if there are bugs related to basic function like unit discovery/mounting in old firmware release but it doesn't seem very probable, i mean this will be a HUGE bug, something that make the unit useless...)
Just to try everything, have you updated your unit to the latest firmware?

Re: Newbie DNS-313 Owner

Hi, I had exactly the same problem with my new 323 I unwrapped today. After several hours of trial an error I did this

1) set a static IP outside the range of the addresses that the router allocates dynamically in my case 10.0.0.10 (the router range is 10.0.0.2-10.0.0.99) => now the web gui works always from the same IP address.
2) disconnect the WAN cable from the router if you are unsure on the router firewall efficiency
3) disable the firewall on the PC
4) search for the 323 using the Easy Search application, now it should find it
now to the core of the problem:
5) try to map the Volume_1 to a local harddrive. If it asks for a userid & password and fails whatever you give you may have the same problem as I had: driver for "Client for Microsoft Networks" was missing!
6) Install the driver and try again. In my case it worked immediately after installing it and without a reboot.

What I will now try to is to see if reactivating the firewall imposes a problem and if I can create a advanced firewall rule to work around it.

/Lars
