By the way i compiled and installed transmission latest version it brings the unit to it's knees.
i'm trying to get that enhanced ctorrent and yobctcs or what it's named to work.

Try to disable jumbo frame if it's enabled on your gigabit router.

Still no replies about the kernel source used. is it the one from d-link or is it the same with patches or is it a kernel from some other source with the storelink patches?
i seems that everyone that uses gigabit has problems with the kernel in this release.
Should i go for a recompile of the d-linke kernel version with kernel config from this one?
is there a kernel config somwhere in the file system from the running kernel?

is this thing still working? considering putting lenny on my 313, and the howto seems kinda incomplete?

is it possible to partition the disk from a mac?

does the fan control and disk sleep function work?

ok, totally noob question, but after i changed owner of the telnetlogin thingy (right after install) i only get this message when trying to telnet in:

and then it just hangs :<

what do i do? are there any ways to add users?

edit; i dont even get the chance to type anything at the login, when i try telnet -l root it just skips and says permission denied :<

yep, i already did that, didnt help when i try to login i just get permission denied

ok, i try to do apt-get update and try to wget some files, but its _extremely_ slow, is it supposed to be this way? :p

I bought the DNS-313 to use it as a backup server. I didn't get to it (yet).

I've installed CharminBaer's lenny and that's great step ahead towards my goal. BTW, in your .rtf the link is not updated, it says  http://msbd.de/dns313/DNS-313_lenny_09212008.tgz, the correct link is in your original post: http://www.msbd.de/dns313/DNS-313_lenny_24092008.tgz ...

Anyway, my main trouble is getting the disk to spindown. I can't!!


I've made some changes (mainly taking the ideas from http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Debian_hdd_spindown ).

- I'd Changed the fstab with the parameter "noatime" so it won't write to disk the access time if it reads a file (that's previously cached).
- I'd Put SYSLOGD="-m 0" in '/etc/default/syslogd' to avoid writing a "MARK" to the syslog each 20 minutes.

I think it's something related to syslogd, because the only files that get modified are 'syslog', 'kern.log' and 'messages', all in /var/log/

I know I could stop syslogd but that doesn't seem a good idea. Maybe putting /var/log in ramfs? Do you know how to do it? If so, maybe a cron job that wrote dayly those files in memory to the hard disk?

Once resolved I should continue whit samba, wich also writes every few minutes the file /var/cache/samba/browse.dat (I'm not sure of that path, i'm writing that from memory). Anyone with that problem too?

Last step will be installing boxbackup or another program that "can" run on the DNS-313 (I think backuppc will sluggish on this little machine, right?)

So there must be a process (I'm guessing it's syslogd or klogd) that it's writing to disk at fixed 30 seconds interval.

Can you check what do you have in /var/log/syslog (or 'kern.log', or 'messages') so I can find some clue?

Do you have /var/log mounted in tmpfs or ramfs?

I hope this thread is still being watched.
I installed Lenny, and tried to use a static IP, but with the NAS switched on, it is using the 1st available dhcp.
Anyway, that's not the real issue. The real issue is, now that I have lenny on this NAS, and when I telnet I get a "venus" prompt, and the hostname is "venus", what do I do now?
I cannot see any of the Debian distro directories.
apt-get produces nothing.
I cannot see the other 450GB data partition.

Is there an idiots guide?

Reposting this from another thread as this is directly involving the topic at hand.

I installed this a couple days ago and had problems of not seeing the box on the net. With D-Links own software I have no problems but for some reason this lenny release messes up my DNS-313 in a odd way.

It gets a new MAC-address and stops functioning totally with my ZyXEL GS-108B gigabit switch. It does not get a IP from my cablemodem nor does it work with a static IP. With a SMC 100mbit switch the box gets a IP and functions but hangs momentarily all the time. 5-10 second network lag attacks although ifconfig shows only minor errors and drops. These lag spikes happen almost once a minute. But if I plug the DNS-313 directly to the cablemodem, no problems. It functions perfectly. Tried various CAT5 and CAT6 cables with no difference.

Why would I get a different MAC address with lenny than with D-Links BusyBox?

I have a little problem. Yesterday I download CharminBaer build of Debian Etch.
I've add official repo to Lenny and Security.

After that I make dist-upgrade thru APT.

Everything works fine but debian doesn't shutdown.

When I make command: halt, shutdown, poweroff ora even I press PButton on BOX, debian holds, turn off the harddrive and disconnect all connections, but the Case is still ON.

All LEDs are on.
After that, when I wanna to turn on my debian, I myst replug the power source.

Any ideas?
Does DNS-313 have ACPI or AMP that needs to be configured or installed packages?

in kernel source i found defconfigs, 129 defconfig for ARM which one i should use on base?
