Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Now i got problems with my gigabit router and the dns. it worked with d-link firmware. But since the upgrade it gets ip from dhcp some times and other times not and when it gets an ip its realy slow kind of like a 33.6k modem with lots of paket loss.
Is there some kind of configuration setting I hawe to set up to make it work in gigabit mode?
or do i hawe to use another router with 100mbit and portforward?
Annoying that this forum seems to be so active :'(

By the way i compiled and installed transmission latest version it brings the unit to it's knees.
i'm trying to get that enhanced ctorrent and yobctcs or what it's named to work.

Try to disable jumbo frame if it's enabled on your gigabit router.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

There were no such setting in the router.
so it's probably some kernel seting och boot setting that is not set up the correct way.
now it's connected to my old 100mbit router that crashes every 120minutes probably because of the load from torrents.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Still no replies about the kernel source used. is it the one from d-link or is it the same with patches or is it a kernel from some other source with the storelink patches?
i seems that everyone that uses gigabit has problems with the kernel in this release.
Should i go for a recompile of the d-linke kernel version with kernel config from this one?
is there a kernel config somwhere in the file system from the running kernel?

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

New question that probably not will be awnserd.
Is this dist compiled against uclibc och standard libc ?
the compiler tells me libc when gcc -print-libgcc-file-name so i figure that means standard libc?
uclib gives smaler ram memory footprint of applications or just smaler executables?
there is a compile flag for optimizing against memory usage?

Maby there is a point going for gentoo linux instead on this machine?

I figure it would be just as installing on a pc.
but I hawe to go for some special boot loader ?

is this thing still working? considering putting lenny on my 313, and the howto seems kinda incomplete? tongue

is it possible to partition the disk from a mac?

does the fan control and disk sleep function work?

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Hi guys,
I recently bought DNS-313 and directly installed Debian with this howto. Everything worked fine.

Even HDD sleep (spindown) function works - install hdparm (apt-get install hdparm) and put this command into /etc/rc.local: hdparm -S 10 /dev/sda - this makes the HDD spindown after 50 seconds of inactivity. You can increase the value 10 to bigger number, increase by 1 for 5 seconds longer delay.

But I am wondering how to tweak disk performance caching and transfer speeds - now I get upload to DNS-313 via Samba speeds about 4MB/s. I will post information as soon as I will discover anything.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

ok, totally noob question, but after i changed owner of the telnetlogin thingy (right after install) i only get this message when trying to telnet in:

steffen-mac:~ steffen$ telnet 10.0.0.13
Trying 10.0.0.13...
Connected to 10.0.0.13
Escape character is '^]'.
login: Permission denied.

and then it just hangs :<

what do i do? are there any ways to add users? tongue

edit; i dont even get the chance to type anything at the login, when i try telnet -l root it just skips and says permission denied :<

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Do you have also changed the rights (chmod) ?

chown 0:102 usr/lib/telnetlogin
chmod 4754 usr/lib/telnetlogin

You dont need to add users because there is a user "root" with password "passwd".

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Hi,

I bought the DNS-313 to use it as a backup server. I didn't get to it (yet).

I've installed CharminBaer's lenny and that's great step ahead towards my goal. BTW, in your .rtf the link is not updated, it says  http://msbd.de/dns313/DNS-313_lenny_09212008.tgz, the correct link is in your original post: http://www.msbd.de/dns313/DNS-313_lenny_24092008.tgz ...

Anyway, my main trouble is getting the disk to spindown. I can't!!

I've made some changes (mainly taking the ideas from http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Debian_hdd_spindown ).

- I'd Changed the fstab with the parameter "noatime" so it won't write to disk the access time if it reads a file (that's previously cached).
- I'd Put SYSLOGD="-m 0" in '/etc/default/syslogd' to avoid writing a "MARK" to the syslog each 20 minutes.

I think it's something related to syslogd, because the only files that get modified are 'syslog', 'kern.log' and 'messages', all in /var/log/

I know I could stop syslogd but that doesn't seem a good idea. Maybe putting /var/log in ramfs? Do you know how to do it? If so, maybe a cron job that wrote dayly those files in memory to the hard disk?

Once resolved I should continue whit samba, wich also writes every few minutes the file /var/cache/samba/browse.dat (I'm not sure of that path, i'm writing that from memory). Anyone with that problem too?

Last step will be installing boxbackup or another program that "can" run on the DNS-313 (I think backuppc will sluggish on this little machine, right?)

Thank you.

Regards.

I'm already using hdparm (I think I didn't have to install it wit apt-get as it was already installed). The problem is that once the disk spins down it awakes 30 seconds after, look to a tail of /var/log/syslog (as you can see I'd set -S 48 (4 minutes)):

---
Apr 30 17:43:32 DNS-313 kernel:
Apr 30 17:43:32 DNS-313 kernel: ---------- SATA-0 STANDBY Pid 0 -----------
Apr 30 17:44:02 DNS-313 kernel:
Apr 30 17:44:02 DNS-313 kernel: ----- SATA-0 Wakeup -----
Apr 30 17:48:32 DNS-313 kernel:
Apr 30 17:48:32 DNS-313 kernel: ---------- SATA-0 STANDBY Pid 0 -----------
Apr 30 17:49:02 DNS-313 kernel:
Apr 30 17:49:02 DNS-313 kernel: ----- SATA-0 Wakeup -----
---

So there must be a process (I'm guessing it's syslogd or klogd) that it's writing to disk at fixed 30 seconds interval.

Can you check what do you have in /var/log/syslog (or 'kern.log', or 'messages') so I can find some clue?

Do you have /var/log mounted in tmpfs or ramfs?

Here's my "mount" table:
---
/dev/sda3 on / type ext2 (rw,noatime,acl,user_xattr)
tmpfs on /lib/init/rw type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
procbususb on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/root.old on /initrd type ext2 (rw,nogrpid)
fusectl on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw)
/dev/sda2 on /mnt/HD_a2 type ext3 (rw,noatime,data=writeback)
tmpfs on /var/spool type tmpfs (rw)
---

Do you also have samba installed?

Thank you.

Regards.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Great work CharminBaer!
I'm using your Lenny distro, works well.

Any possible way to install support for xfs into the kernel? Ext3 is not the fastest, I guess xfs would work much better.

Thanks

Piotr

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Hi;
I hope this thread is still being watched.
I installed Lenny, and tried to use a static IP, but with the NAS switched on, it is using the 1st available dhcp.
Anyway, that's not the real issue. The real issue is, now that I have lenny on this NAS, and when I telnet I get a "venus" prompt, and the hostname is "venus", what do I do now?
I cannot see any of the Debian distro directories.
apt-get produces nothing.
I cannot see the other 450GB data partition.

Is there an idiots guide?

Thanks.

Ahhh, sorry. Looks like I was logged into my Media server!

So now, even tho the HDD is green, I have no IP for this NAS.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Reposting this from another thread as this is directly involving the topic at hand.

I installed this a couple days ago and had problems of not seeing the box on the net. With D-Links own software I have no problems but for some reason this lenny release messes up my DNS-313 in a odd way.

It gets a new MAC-address and stops functioning totally with my ZyXEL GS-108B gigabit switch. It does not get a IP from my cablemodem nor does it work with a static IP. With a SMC 100mbit switch the box gets a IP and functions but hangs momentarily all the time. 5-10 second network lag attacks although ifconfig shows only minor errors and drops. These lag spikes happen almost once a minute. But if I plug the DNS-313 directly to the cablemodem, no problems. It functions perfectly. Tried various CAT5 and CAT6 cables with no difference.

Why would I get a different MAC address with lenny than with D-Links BusyBox?

Hello,

I just have installed lenny on my dns313, work fine, thanks :-)

How can I get iptables ?
How can I compile my own kernel with the needed modules?

thanks,

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Hello,

I have a little problem. Yesterday I download CharminBaer build of Debian Etch.
I've add official repo to Lenny and Security.

After that I make dist-upgrade thru APT.

Everything works fine but debian doesn't shutdown.

When I make command: halt, shutdown, poweroff ora even I press PButton on BOX, debian holds, turn off the harddrive and disconnect all connections, but the Case is still ON.

All LEDs are on.
After that, when I wanna to turn on my debian, I myst replug the power source.

Any ideas?
Does DNS-313 have ACPI or AMP that needs to be configured or installed packages?

Thnx for answer.

@idarek - restore /etc/init.d/halt from etch. ( you should have copy of halt in /etc/init.d directory.
