Watch a movie over the network using dns313?

Does this work for you:
- mount an smb share of your dns313
- double-click a movie file
- watch the movie

For me, this doesn't work. The movie sound stutters, the video is never in sync. I was wondering if this is a problem of my setup or a general problem with the dns313.

My setup:
- charminbear's lenny
- WD Caviar Green 500 GB

Output of hdparm:

Code:

hdparm -tT /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 134 MB in 2.00 seconds = 67.00 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 18 MB in 3.65 seconds = 4.93 MB/sec

Please share your experiences.

What is your speed of copying files over a network from the NAS to the computer?
How NAS is connected to a network?

Re: Watch a movie over the network using dns313?

Is there a tool to measure the speed while copying a file to an smb share? It is roughly in the range of 3-4 MB/sec. A secure copy (scp) gives me a speed of 1.8 MB/sec but I think this is because of encryption.

The NAS is connected to my wireless LAN router by cable (100 MBit), my computer accesses the NAS wirelessly (54 MBit).

Re: Watch a movie over the network using dns313?

Which format are you trying to watch a movie?
If the avi (having a size of 1.3Gb) or DVD (having a size of 4.7Gb) then your connection speed should be sufficient.
Maybe this is a problem codec? How to play the movie, if NAS connected via USB?

Don't look further ... your problem with files streaming, must be caused by your Wireless access.

I have the same type of problem, with big media files. Even if the data rate is not so bad, it is not consistent enough, for (HD) video steaming.

Try to play the same video, with an Ethernet link with your router.

Re: Watch a movie over the network using dns313?

So I did test watching the movie directly both via USB and an ethernet link to my router - and the movie played. It's exactly how you suspected it, Electrocut.

The movie files are ~800 MB large and are encoded in MPEG-4.

Isn't there some way to set up a streaming server on the DNS 313 that sets up some kind of buffering?

Edit: mediatomb does a good job at serving movie files.

Thanks for the feedback! It's interesting to know that mediatomb deals better with inconsistent networks, that samba do.

It can be a good solution to play videos across a Wireless network. I'll try someday.
