I have the same problem with the noisy fan. I created a small shell script called from crond that logs the temperature of the motherboard and the disks in every minute. My experience is that if I managed to send both disks to standby, then the motherboard is still around 45 C (probably due to the summer as well) and thus the fan is spinning almost constantly. Almost constantly means that I can measure around 2-3 minutes in every hour when the fan stops.

I tries to open the case at the top, just by removing the top cover. Actually I got worse values, so the temperature (and so the noise level increased).

I think I will move out the nas from my room...

I would appreciate if you could share your script with me. I am looking for something similar as I have the same issue with the noise of my fan but I want the disk to be able to hibernate.

I got bored waitin for dlink to fix this so took a hole-saw to mine and bolted a silent 80mm fan to it, much better now

I did the same on mine.... For your info it cost me around 6 EUR. Fan : Zalman 80mm ZM-F1 (80x80x25) and a metallic protector so I won't chop my fingers. The specific fan is working on silent mode on 5V. I tested it thoroughly. In addition, without changing anything in the airflow of the box (I just opened a whole in the back and put the fan) I have better temperatures and no noise. At last!!!! I have it on my living room!!

Hi guys,

I did the same, brute forced and installed a 92mm fan (Thanks for the inspiration Gyngy!), but as some of you guys are saying, my fan won't start either, unless I give it a push manually. Has anyone solved it by finding a 5V to 12V converter?

Well, my fan spins normally at 5V. But I think it was pure luck ;-)

I have changed the original fan with the noctua . At moment I put it over the two hdds ,control fan always on "high" . No noise from the fan and temperature of two hdd is 32 c° instead of 41 ,system temperature 40 instead of 47/48 c° with the original fan . A friend of my is doing a new cover box , i don't want break the original

I have not teared my dns-320 yet, but I was wondering what the cutout on the metal case opposite to the fan is for.

Also, what would be the cooling effect if you Swiss cheezed the bottom of the case and had it standing on a hard surface?

Anyone still looking at this thread? Reason I ask is I've just installed (hacked) the above mentioned Noctua fan into my DNS 320 and all is working well, runs super quietly with temps < 38°c.

BUT....

I can only get the fan to work on the (Low/High) setting on the DNS software, if I set it to (OFF/LOW/HIGH) it fails to start, unless I manually nudge the blade, then it spins.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is FFP the solution?

The energy consumption is the only thing bothering me but if this negligible I'll leave it on.

I Fixed My Noisy Fan in my DNS-320, I put a switch on the back so I can Turn the Blody thing Off.
It only gets a bit warm when it's doing a lot of hard continuous work which isn't very often

I installed a noctua nf-r8 instead of the original fan.
I used the ULNA (ultra low noise adapter) and set fan control to "auto(Low/High)" and my NAS firmware is version 2.03.

but the noctua doesn't want to start, even with a little help.

Am I missing something ?
Do you have an advice ?

Hi,
yes, still on watch ;-)
Your fan ment to be used for range 4-13V.
DNS will provide 5V so do not use any adapter - this adapter is doing same - making from 12 V (by using resistance) 5V.

Then it will work.

I removed the adapter and set the fan control to "auto low/high".
and it works as you said.

I also tried with the setting (off/low/high) but it doesn't work. I got log error : Fan Is Unable To Spin Or Fan Doesn't Exist.)

anyway, it is not a problem because the noctua is SO QUIET. I cannot hear anything at all !
now I can use my dns 320.

here are some pics of my (ugly) hack.

FYI, if I had to do it again, I think I would attached the noctua to the TOP plastic case.
It is easier to remove, as you don't have to remove DNS320 screws, etc. etc.
But I may be unaware of possible issues ?

Hi guys, I've been following this thread a while since I'm replacing the original fan with the Noctua NF-R8. My problem is that it won't start even when I set the fan control to Auto (Low / High), it just moves a little bit but nothing more. I don't use any of the adapters for ULNA or LNA.

I haven't installed fun_plug, is this a prerequisite?

Hi there,
no it is not necessary to have fun_plug.

Please test your fan with "manual (always on HIGH)" setting for fan control.

If it will not be spinning you probably need to replace fan. Please check polarity of cable connector as well!

Hi,

When "Manual (always on High)" is selected, the fan starts spinning by itself, so that's all good. Maybe I just have bad luck with my fan... Anyway, I have mounted it on top of the NAS, so I guess I will have to start it manually each time the NAS is used

I will try some other stuff, but hopefully I can get it to spin automatically in Auto (low/high), that's good enough for me.

I did the same.

Bought a Bequiet fan (that works from 4v) from Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003 … 04_s01_i00), opened a whole in the back (of the black plastic box of the DNS-320) and put the fan there.

It works in Auto-Mode (Stop/Low/High) like a charm. In High mode I cannot hear it and I am getting 34 C° on the HDD and 42 C° on the chipset.

And NO noise finally!! I can't believe I took about one year to decide to do this..

Hi guys,

You can switch the fun power supply from 5V to 12V by resoldering the inductor from position L1 to L2 as shown on the pic. But I don't know exactly how much power will it supply in this mode.

Same noise issue here. Solved it by removing the plastic case.

Before (Sys/HDD1/HDD2): 48 38 37
After: 42 35 33

The room temp was the same (26 degrees Celsius).

If you don't want to modd your NAS, you should consider trying this
