dd disk test results seem low

Hello,

I am using the DNS 343 with FW 1.04 and 2 x 2TB Barracuda drives (ST32000641AS).  I am trying to figure out if the 343 supports SATA, SATA II, or STAT III (seems I cannot get a solid answer when I am looking on the net) and if I am getting the correct performance out of the system.

It seems to me the read/write times are slow. When I run a test using an 8.5 GB media file I get about 35 MB/s (reading) as reported by dd (dd if=mediaFile of=/dev/null).  I can get it to about 50MB/s if I use bs=8k in the dd test.

I was wondering if anyone has the same experience and/or is this normal read speed tests?

Cheers!

Re: dd disk test results seem low

It could well be that 50MB/sec is max, and that is not due to the SATA controller, but due to the CPU. If you run 'top' simultaneous to 'dd', you'll see that the CPU is fully utilized at 50MB/sec
