Iptables on DNS 320

Hi all

Does anyone have any luck with install iptables on DNS 320?

I’m still stuck at

# iptables -L
iptables v1.4.9: can’t initialize iptables table `filter’: Table does not exist (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

Any ideas?

Re: Iptables on DNS 320

Perhaps I should explain why I need to have iptables
Basically, I have the DNS-320 hacked up with funplug
- telnet works
- sshd works
- loaded up with optware
- installed squid
- got squid to work

Then from my other PC, I configure the browser to use a proxy located the DNS-320's IP, port 3128. I look from the logs and its good to go.

Here's the thing, I intend to use this as a content filter, for my child's laptop ... but going to his laptop and configuring the browser to use a proxy would be quite ineffective. For this reason, I need to get transparent proxying up and running so that the DNS-320 can transparently proxy the website surfing requests and I can also add in acls to prevent websites from loading up at specific times etc.

I am familiar with setting this up on a full system i.e. an old netbook but I am wondering if this can be done with the DNS-320

Any ideas?

Re: Iptables on DNS 320

As iptables already told you, you don't have kernel support for it. When you're lucky you can compile and load the modules using the GPL sources, if you're not lucky (no GPL sources, or no sufficient toolchain, or the kernel just can't load the modules) you'll have to exchange the kernel.

Re: Iptables on DNS 320

I understand that I don't have kernel support for iptables.

Located here are some precomplied kernel modules
http://nas-tweaks.net/257/precompiled-k … d-dns-325/

Sadly, iptables isn't available.

While I found this
http://www.mjfox.ch/wordpress/dns-323-and-iptables/
which basically is for one to compile the kernel modules, i am unfortunate not sufficiently skilled to do that.

As such, I'm asking if anyone has an "easier" option of a pre-compiled kernel module and something that I could use.

PS - Is there anyone else out there that is also looking towards using iptables on their DNS32X device?

Re: Iptables on DNS 320

I am also interested by installing iptables on my dns 325. Because I need to NAT for openVPN.
I know that Uli has posted on his website some precompiled kernel modules :
http://nas-tweaks.net/257/precompiled-k … d-dns-325/

In this page, in comments, Uli looks to have given to FaBys some information about iptables modules:
http://nas-tweaks.net/249/building-an-a … 0-dns-325/

But iptables modules aren't listed. By the way, how can I know what modules are needed by iptables ?
