Why fix the path problem with an edit instead of a soft link?

I'm thinking of buying a DNS-325 as a backup for my DNS-323 (well actually making the DNS-323 a backup for the DNS-325).  The DNS-323 is working just fine, but if it goes out I would need a replacement fast, so it is best for me to put that in place and have the DNS-323 as the backup.  Given the customizing I have done and such the DNS-325 seems like the best choice for me so I was looking into what is different about it and the DNS-323 and saw the change in paths from /mnt/HD_XX to /mnt/HD/HD_XX, and that the solution provided is to edit the scripts.

So I want to know why didn't the fun_plug script get changed to put in the needed soft links instead of trying to fix any scripts that might be referring to these mount points?  The performance difference of going through a soft link has to be close to unmeasurable.

[ADDED] Actually as I think of it they are on the same file system, so this could even be a hard link and then you wouldn't have any performance hit.
