Install Name Server

Firstly,  a BIG thank you to everyone who participates in this wiki!

Now to the reason for my post:

Is it possible to install a name server without taking the debian route?

I've tried to search the wiki for answers but haven't found one.  It also doesn't help that this device is called DNS-xxx.

I would be grateful if someone can point me to a thread that already covers this or to a pre-packaged install.

And as a request for advice, do you think it's a good/bad idea to run a name server on the device?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Install Name Server

Perhaps you can ask fonz if he will include something like http://tinydns.org/ in fun_plug (http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fun-plug/) or as fun_plug already has Perl you may be able to find a Perl script that can function as a DNS server for you.

As to whether it is a good idea or not, that would depend on what you were going to use the DNS server for.

Re: Install Name Server

A fun_plug package is available for dnsmasq. I'm running it on my DNS-323 and it seems to work fine.

Re: Install Name Server

Thank you!  I will try dnsmasg and let you know how it goes.

I'm using the DNS server at home.  I am trying to avoid having to manually modify hosts files on 3-4 computers i have networked at home.

Re: Install Name Server

I use a Linksys WRT-45G router as my gateway/firewall device.  I have loaded an
aftermarket  firmware called Tomato on the router.  This firmware has dnsmasq
in it.  This allows me to have my localnet host names defined on my router, so I don't
have to modify hosts files on my local computers.

Have you looked at the possibility of your router being used as the DNS server for
your network?

Re: Install Name Server

Here's what I've done:

Installed the package:
funpkg /ffp/pkg/packages/dnsmasq-2.45-2.tgz

Made sure that it runs at startup:
chmod a+x /ffp/start/dnsmasq.sh

Created a configuration file:
/ffp/etc/dnsmasq.conf

It seems to be working well.
FYI my configuration file is currently blank.

Re: Install Name Server

Hey mig,

Thanks for the recommendation.  I've looked into installing dd-wrt, openwrt, and tomato on my router but, unfortunately, it doesn't seem possible at this time.  I will definitely make sure that whatever router i buy to replace my current one will be cable of running one of those systems.  But until then i thought that i might use my DNS-321 as a name server.
