html picture gallery suggestions?

http://www.synology.com/enu/products/fe … ation2.php

I need something like the Photostation functionality...sharing pics in "quick create" HTML pages from the DSN-323 is something my wife really wants me to get set up.

Any thoughts as to a way to get close to this using the DNS-323 and available Windows shareware/freeware?

Me, too. But I don't know any usable software for that. And I don't have too much time currently doing it myself...

Re: html picture gallery suggestions?

just use Adobe Lightroom, it makes flash (or html) photo albums on the fly.  You just have to tell it where the picture folder is and it creates an album with thumbnails and will auto save to disk or ftp.

Re: html picture gallery suggestions?

Thanks!

I did find something called JAlbum which looks like it has some promise...has an active use community/webboard, but haven't had any time to really look at it yet.  Freeware.

I'll check out light room, jiggysmb, thanks for the recommendation.  Don't usually like Adobe apps, they can be pretty invasive when you install them, but I need to meet my CEO's needs (i.e., make the wife happy) smile so extreme measures are called for...

Re: html picture gallery suggestions?

Ouch!  Lightroom is like $299 on Adobe's site, $199 on Amazon.   Not that desperate (yet).  smile  Any other (cheaper!) suggestions?

Yes, this is what I use to setup my photo albums on my website.  It is pretty simple to use and free.  I am trying to get php running so I can use some of the options in these templates (direct download, purchase, paypal, etc...).

looks nice, but pretty heavyweight (e.g. lists mysql as requirement). I think what dns323-talker pointed to is much simpler. Not more than a script that observes the photo directory, and whenever new stuff comes in, create thumbs and html.

If you opt for v 1.5.6 you don't need MySQL. But you are correct creating thumbs uses a few cpu cycles ;-)

we need thumbs, and if that doesn't take ages, i'm happy with it. i was more concerned about mysql, which is usually run as a daemon, consuming precious memory. if 1.5.6 works without mysql, it's worth a closer look.

Re: html picture gallery suggestions?

Looks like 1.5.6 has a pretty good set of requirements:

http://gallery.menalto.com/requirements

brief overview of the requirements of Gallery 1 and Gallery 2:
Platform - UNIX (BSD, Linux, ...) or Windows
Webserver - Apache, Microsoft IIS, Zeus, ...
PHP - PHP version 4.1.0 or greater, PHP safe_mode must be turned off
Image Processing Library - In order to automatically generate thumbnails and resized versions of your photos, Gallery requires either ImageMagick or NetPBM. Gallery 2 additionally supports GD and GraphicsMagick

Could I make this work w/the DNS-323 on a Windoze-PC network?

Re: html picture gallery suggestions?

DNS323Talker - You can download a trial of lightroom and will have to reinstall it every 30 days if you like it, or email/PM me if you need another option to run the app.

Re: html picture gallery suggestions?

I've downloaded Lightroom, and can't seem to find a way to create an HTML gallery that includes a slideshow feature, as I can with JAlbum...is that possible with Lightroom?

Thanks!

Re: html picture gallery suggestions?

Oops...found the Flash Gallery option....interesting app, suffers from the usual "Adobe interface" disease, but some nice features...

Re: html picture gallery suggestions?

I love it. Every 3-6 months I do a gallery for my new baby boy.  It makes it easy for family to see pics and it serves as a back up.  I use the flash gallery and the floating thumbnail bar, so when you move the mouse sideways the pictures start scrolling through.

DNS-323...I don't know if you are into building your own website.  I am sure you are since you are looking for an HTML gallery creator.

I downloaded a program called Firstpage 2006 (a free real time wysiwyg, or all code web creator).  http://www.evrsoft.com/1stpage3.shtml

I haven't used this feature in it, but it has a gallery creator.  I may mess with it today and see what kind of options it has and if it has auto update as you dump more pictures into it.

Other than that, I have been using Jalbum.

Re: html picture gallery suggestions?

Bizarre...I was looking for this thread and finally noticed it had been renamed!  smile   The name is more descriptive...I guess I can't complain.

Thanks, WildSioux, for the pointer to 1stPage.  Looks like an interesting program in general.  Probably not what I want at the moment, as I'm looking for for a relatively simple tool that I can use to quickly put up some images for view, and maybe train my wife to use.

But I'm going to download 1stPage for when I have time to play with it later...thanks!

Got it working. But it's too slow. A single image takes minutes to convert.

Re: html picture gallery suggestions?

I've been playing around with the FotoPlay skin for JAlbum, and while it's not perfect, it looks like a very promising option.  It has its own skin forum on the JAlbum site, and the developer provides prompt support via the forum and email.  It is very configurable (more than I have the skill to take advantage of), and (important for me) my family & friends that I tested it on found it easiest to use of several that I had them test.  It shares one important feature with the Adobe product, in that images are resized down to fit the available screen space if necessary.
