What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

Kind of curious here about the longest uptime any of you have had here on the dns-323. Reason for asking is since some threads talks about corrupt fs, freezes, hangs, etc. Knowing that this units is fairly new on the market so I don't expect reading about 1yr uptime, yet.

Hrm.. well, can't say that  aprox 8 days is something to be happy about! If you said 80 days I would go for it. I sure hope that other users can report a bit longer time.

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

I've had my DNS-323 about 18 days.  It has been running continuously, with no lockups or hangs,
but I have shutdown/restarted several times to swap the hard drive to a deskside machine to
get 'fun_plug' working.  I'm still 'playing' with it before I commit it to service as a home file server.

The two problems I am looking to solve now, is a time drift of more than 5 minutes a day, and the
lack of support for an Uninterruptable Power Supply.

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

I got mine a month before it was released to the public, I belive I am going on 4 months and it has been going strong ever since.  I never turn it off.  The only concern is that under heavy use the box gets hot.

Good to see so many people joining the board and enjoying the DNS.  Early frustarations had me thinking this would be a short lived product.

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

Howdy,

We've got three running 24/7 for the past 36 days.

I actually only had a few minor problems with the 1.01b running EXT3. I beat the heck out the them, loading hundreds of files into hundreds of directories. I DID turn off the ITunes server as it added extra files to all the directories with MP3's. Now I have just MP3 files and I use external programs to stream the tunes around.

But after all the problems stated on this and other blogs, I switched to EXT2 RAID 1 and then a few days later I upgraded to 1.02. (Formating between all upgrades).

I'm running Seagate 320's and 400's and over all, I'm VERY happy with the units.

I have had problems in the past with the junk NAS's that Vantec put out a few months ago, so I really banged on these.
One of the tests that the Vantecs would not pass is copying 50 Zipped or Rared files to a directory, then copying the files back and then running RAR's Verify function (which verifies the files and crc's sector by sector). The Vantecs would always fail. On Text files I actually found blocks of text from one file, inside another file...... Their tech support was clueless.....

So, I grabbed some DNS323's and after ALOT of beating and pounding..... I'm pretty happy with them.....

And each day I get happier....

Good luck with yours !!!!

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

i've been running since receiving the unit, with some reboots/restarts while setting things up. it's been going about 2 weeks since then, no problems with crashing/hanging the unit itself (but I've been avoiding the things that I know will hang the interface, like asking the iTunes server to index all my files).

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

My unit (upgraded with firmware 1.02 and running EXT2) cannot work more than 8 days without reboot. I have a UPS and no bad condition or heavy load (I use the DNS323 at home) but it freezes and I'm not even able to use the front switch to power down the unit. I have to remove the power cord.  When it freezes, network share is unaivalable but I can access the web login page but the login does not work !

I'm not satisfied with the DNS323, in 2007 you can expect from a Linux based device to be rock solid !
It works like a NT 3,51 shitty box ! Even a Windows 2000 server works much better without so many reboots.
The DNS 323 is nice, but that's all...  My NLSU2 was really slow to write on HDD, and three power supplies, two USB cords and three boxes including the two external HDD were messy with a lot of noise due to the small fans on the HDD cases but it works !

I had at home a Linksys NLSU2 without UPS during two years and had only to reboot twice a year.

I have installed in offices more than 6 Linksys EFG 120 and have to reboot only one or two times in two years. But EFG 120 costs a lot (around 470 euros) and is quite old with PATA hdd. The only issue on EFG120 was the embedded print server which sometimes freeze with certain postscript or PCL commands issued from a file. But I do not use anymore the  print server because you can buy nice and cheap second hand network cards for HP laser printer. I can testify that EXT3 on EFG120 works nicely when recovering from a power outage without UPS and repares the files.

This will sound odd, it might be better if you disable Dayligh Savings. We still have no proof that it'll be better, but when DST is enabled - the unit "leaks" though it's at-queue. See this post.

FYI: 8 days with DST enabled equals 2^8 entries in your at-queue. This means that on the eight night, the unit will perform 256 tasks at 01:59 and will add 2^9 entires in the same queue.

Please report back if your problem disappears when DST is disabled - or if you don't have DST enabled.

I guess itwould be enough to "Set Time" in the DST box 128 times and set the clock to 01:50 to if the box is lost. This sine every "Set Time" adds two entries in the at-queue. Someone wants to test?

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

Quick little update about the uptime; the unit that I bought now around 10 month ago are running with firmware 1.03 in a RAID1 with 2x500gb disks. The longest period that I have had it up & running without restart, firmware update or power failure is now around ~5 month. To be mentioned is that it's a clean box that haven't been changed in any way and I'm only using the Samba and Ftp daemon; everything else has been disabled. I would say that an average day there is about 1-2gb transferred to or from the unit.

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

I have my box with 2x250Go since June 07. I never had any freeze from the box itself. I had a couple of power failure (storms) in the house (which obviously led to a "unattended" shutdown from the box). But it always restarted safely.

I have fw 1.03, Fonz's fun_plug 0_3, nfs, usb-storage, Etch, Firefly, ssh/sfpt access running  7/24. No printer.

Mine was up for about 3 or 4 months at my apartment before I moved.... then it was off for about 2 months while the un-packing was underway... It has been running for about 3 months now at the house.

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

Mine is running 24/7 for several month now.
It froze just once during that time and a simple power-off / power-on got it running again.

Cheers,

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

I have yet to experience the unit freezing or hanging on me.  Actually, it went down the other day but that was because of a power failure in the home smile

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

Since I got it, last month, it's been very reliable and I have not experienced any problems with it. Currently it only has one 500GB WD disk in it. I'm running Samba, FTP and iTunes services. Everything works nicely with my Xbox (XBMC), PCs and Macs.

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

Mine has been running almost since I got it more than 2 weeks ago.

I have mldonkwy downloading everything ever since I got it and I had also another media server running there. After a couple of days the unit started to be a little slow with transfers, mostly because ot the media server so I shut the automatic start and it runs so much better.

Of course it is not what it was built for so I am happy wth the performance.

Cheers

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

Uh, you know, I don't remember the last time I restarted mine.  Probably about 2 or 3 months now.  I have it hooked up to a UPS, so even the last powerdrop doesn't shut it down.

Before I mounted a fan in front of the box blowing into it, I could go at best a week or so before it would die (a day, hours or even minutes in some cases), now it is stable as bedrock.

If your device is flaking out, it is probably heat - pull the front off and point a fan into it.

Assuming that you don't have it in an oven, external cooling should not be required - if your's won't run without it, it's defective.

I'm in the Caribbean, no air conditioning, ambient temperature ranging from low 30's to low 40's - my DNS-323 sits on a shelf in a rack full of network equipment and runs 24/7 - with the disk spun down, internal temperature averages 45*c climbing to a maximum of 50*c with both disks active.

I can't tell you the longest uptime, that would actually have been determined by the longest time we've gone without a power failure, but in the nine or so months I've had it, it's never hung.

Running 24/7 since I bought it in May.  (Two 500G hard drives in RAID1 w/Fonz's fun plug.)

Only turned it off once, when we went on vacation in late July.

The DNS-323 has been incredibly solid for me, the most dependable part of my network.

Re: What is Your longest uptime on the DNS-323?

After I update firmware to version 1.04 beta, it's never down, I don't remember how long it's been.

I use ssh to connect to it to start/stop nfs, mlnet and so on as I need. And I have a svn server running on it as well. Since it backed up by UPS, last time power fail didn't affect it as well. So, pretty reliable.
