CAnnot access FTP remotely

Tried over and over again with this DNS 323 unit to access it from office and various friends have tried and cannot access it remotely.  Only able to get so far into the directory andthen it stops.

Any suggestions?

Re: CAnnot access FTP remotely

Can you tell us more about the network topology and firewall / routers that are
involved in this connection attempt?

The ftp server on my DNS-323 works on my internal home lan, stock out-of-the-box;
however, I would not attempt to access it remotely due to my own security concerns,
without a VPN.

DNS-323 • 2x Seagate Barracuda ES 7200.10 ST3250620NS 250GB SATAII (3.0Gb/s) 7200RPM 16MB • RAID1 • FW1.03 • ext2

As I said in the other thread, if it's only remote ftp that's the problem I would say with a very high certainty that it's a networking issue...

Re: CAnnot access FTP remotely

I've used the ftp server, as mig puts it, stock out-of-the-box, across the internet by simply forwarding port 21 to the appropriate ip address and starting the ftp server.

For security reasons, this is not a permanent setup - the port forwarding is disabled unless I have a specific need to access the device.

As haydnH has suggested, this is most likely a networking issue - you need to ensure that your network has been configured correctly, that the network seetings on the DNS-323 have been configured correctly, including the default gateway and that the firewall at the client end will allow the incoming traffic.

In fact - your statement "Only able to get so far into the directory and then it stops" suggests that your problem may lie at the client end - it sounds like you are establishing the control channel on port 21, but you are unable to establish the data channel - many NAT firewalls will allow the control channel to be established since it is initiated from the client on the inside of the firewall, but block the data channel because this is initiated from the server which is on the ouside of the firewall.

Re: CAnnot access FTP remotely

It might be a try to disable passive transfers on the ftp client because the ftp server uses a port > 1024 in passive mode which is normally not in the port forward list of a router or blocked anyway by a firewall.
