ive been told that Ext2 supports unicode filenames, but i dont seem to be able to move files onto the unit (via samba from windows box) without the filenames corrupting.
can anyone clue me in on whats needed to get the dns to be able to handle foreign language (specifically japanese) characters in filenames? is it an issue with samba?
heres an example file name:
鶴の巣籠 (奥州伝).mp3

Kyorei, you can find the answer in the FAQ section of the D-Link website. "If you are storing non-English character files, you will need to change the Language setting from the Easy Search Utility to ensure full compatibility with those files."

Please confirm that it is indeed possible to store files with Japanese file names after the setting hast been changed. I am about to order a DNS-323 and need support for Japanese file names. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I have been using the japanese sjis language setting some success but no 100%. files do transfer but some kanji chars get corrupted and I am unable to access the file (at least under Windows Explorer). I am using vista and firmware 1.03.

I have been unable to get it to work with the japanese character filenames I have, even after shifting into Japanese mode, as suggested in that dlink techsupport article.
when copied across with windows explorer, the filenames are changed, for example:
"01 滝落.mp3" becomes "01~G%.MP3"
the fact that the file extention becomes capitalised seems suspicious to me - like there is some processing going on.
I have a friend, far more knowledgeable in unix, playing around with samba and codepages to see if he can resolve this.
I will post any results here.

That's strange, because it does work for me, only certain "kanji" characters do not work.
words like ドラマ and 涙そうそう work but "黃" and "驄" do not work (the latter really is Chinese characters but I am assuming you are Japanese so you know that already) so I guess I am cheating here. i.e. proper japanese characters do work.
if you see "01~G%.MP3", try viewing the characters under a ftp console session, you should see 01 滝落.mp3 (I have set vista set to use Japanese for non-unicode app, if you are running xp, you will need the mui pack), that's what I've found if I see truncation in filenames (which happens for those Chinese characters).

Another solution would be to establish the share as an afp:// share using netatalk. This handles unicode filenames well; but, my current install has just fallen over and I'm not able to get afp shares working again.

I also have the same problem with Kyorei but in my case the characters are in Simplified Chinese. I'm using fiimware 1.03 and have followed the instructions on how to enable the foreign language support but apparently still doesn't work.
I've been in correspondence with the DLink tech support but the progress is very slow.

I just bought the DNS323, with firmware 1.03. I did set the language to "simplified Chinese".
I can not get the file name works in Simplified chinese, neither in the windows env or in the FTP web env.
Ok, I created a temp directory there, and entered the simplified chinese charactor as the directory name. it shows as "Ny_", and not in Chinese. Now, comes problem, I can neither delete this temp directory nor change name for it.
I am very much appreciate for any help on this issue.

OK, the simplified chinese works on the filenames both in the windows environment and in the FTP web environment.
However, it does not work on the fold name. I can live with this bug.

Since the chinese code is in GB2312 and not in UTF-8, then my swedish charset does not work. ÅÖÄåöä will not work.
Why not just simply use the UTF-8???

Try firmware 1.04 beta which come with samba 3.x. samba 3.x has better Unicode support. I just want to know when will D-Link release firmware 1.04
