Confirmed by D-Link - SEAGATE 400GB Barracuda not supported

I have had a lot of trouble with my DNS-323. I have spent several hours
on the phone and a lot of e-mail to D-Link support.

I am not able to get my DNS-323 to work with SEAGATE 400GB Barracuda
7200.9 SATA2 NCQ (ST3400833AS). On the Norwegian D-link site they states that
SEAGATE ST3400832AS 400GB is tested and are supported. To underline the
difference, my disks have model number ending at 33AS but the at disks D-Link has
tested the model number ends at 32AS.

I did not pay that much attention to this difference when I bought these
disks to my DNS-323 but when I ran in to trouble getting this to work it
become a matter of importance.

For those of you that not speak or read the beautiful Norwegian
language I will try to translate the messages from Nordic D-Link
support. But the messages read as following:

Nei det eneste de har å si er at det bør prøves med harddisker som
ligger på vår kompatibilitets liste.

Og siden de harddiskene du hadde skaffet deg ikke var på listen over de
godkjente, så kunne de ikke garantere for at de skulle fungere heller.

Den listen forandrer seg hele tiden, de prøver å teste så mange disker
som mulig, men dette tar tid.

Så det er det jeg får som tilbakemelding i fra dem, er å få prøvd med
harddisker de kan garantere for virker på enheten.

This messages briefly stats that only support disk that are listed on
their web site.

So my clear advice to everyone that are going to buy a DNS-323, carefully
read the list of supported disks. They stats that "Most other SATA
drives will also be compatible." In my case that is for certain not true.

Let's put it this way - none of the disks I have successfully used in my DNS323 are on that list.

What exactly is the reason for the disks not being supported? As long as they adhere to the SATA interface definition there is no reason why they should not work.  Are they not being detected by the DNS-323 or do the commands fail on them. Have you tried smartctl?

1. Disable NCQ
2. Disable SATAII

I think that both can be disabled by jumpers on the drive. I think the problem is NCQ, and if you cannot disable NCQ by a jumper then contact Seagate and ask for a utility allowing you to do this. You'll need a PC with SATA for this, I guess.

It's a pity that the unit does not support NCQ - if this is the case. Anyone else having problems with NCQ drives, or any success stories?

I have a pair of Seagate SATA2 with NCQ, and they appear to work fine.

D-Link nordic support can not get the disks to work with my DNS-323. Because they are not listed under supported disks they simply tell's me that is the reason and I have to purchase disks that are on this list to get it work.

I totally agree with you that SATA disk should work but the solution D-Link offers me is to pay me my money back. In one way it is a fair offer but then I am stuck with two disk that I have no use fore.

There is only one jumper on this disk, 1.5 or 3 Gb/s operation mode. For the time being I do not have any PC with SATA available but I will try this out as soon as posible.

Offically suppored just means they actually tested a specific make and model of a drive - they aren't going to be exhaustive in their testing, and not being on the list isn't an automatic black mark aginst the drive, but rather a sign that DLink is cheap and lazy in its testing.  I'm betting that if 4 or 5 customers reported that model xxx of make yyy worked fine with their dns-323, it would make it onto the list the next time it was updated (if ever).

You would have to find a seriously flawed drive like the old deskstars before you could really point to the make and model as the real cause of a problem, anything else is likely a flaw with your harddrive or your dns-323.  Gotta love the acceptable quality bell curve.

You were right about one of my disks, it was defect. It is returned to my vendor and I am waiting for a replacement.

Hello,
ive got the same Problem with this Seagate HD 7200.9 SATA2 NCQ (ST3400833AS) some month ago.
At this Moment i have 400GB Seagate 7200.10 in my DNS-323. ".10" is a never Firmware Version than ".9"
The HD 7200.9 does not work in DNS-323. But the 7200.10 works great!!
So you have to buy some new HD, thats the only way!

Hello and thanks for the information.

I have found a work around. When I power on my DNS-323 no disks are found. I have to restart my DNS-323 from the web GUI before the unit is able to find the disk.

Regarding firmware, is it not possible to upgrade it?
