has anyone thought of doing this or thought of a need for doing this? my reasoning is that this box will be on 24x7. and well, why not? ok, why not is not the best reason, but figured that this could be accomplished. however, im no linux guru so got no idea on how to accomplish this

What services do you want to proxy?

DNS-323 • 2x Seagate Barracuda ES 7200.10 ST3250620NS 250GB SATAII (3.0Gb/s) 7200RPM 16MB • RAID1 • FW1.03 • ext2

Re: Proxy Server on the DNS?

Your best bet for web proxy is probably Squid. http://www.squid-cache.org/
There are binary versions available for Debian on the ARM processor.
This will require you to install Debian on the DNS-323, either chroot http://dns323.kood.org/howto:chroot_debian
or native install http://dns323.kood.org/howto:install_debian.  You can use the Debian
package manager 'apt-get' to install Squid (and any necessary dependencies).

Your other option is to create a cross-compile environment http://dns323.kood.org/howto:crosscompile
which would allow you to compile any web proxy source software for the stock kernel (arm - uclibc)
