Weird samba unicode issue (not working for linux)

I flashed to 1.04beta firmware and created a custom smb.conf to handle unicode filenames: unix charset = UTF-8 & dos charset = CP850.

All things kind of work between Windows and DNS-323. (Occassionally it still creates _____ for filenames)

On my regular linux box, if I smbmount the DNS-323 share, all filenames contain Chinese/Japanese chars are messed up. If I smbmount the share with same set of files reside on the Windows machine, all those characters display fine in linux.

I have played with the codeapge and iocharset options for smbmount, and it didn't help.

Any idea where the problem might be?

Thanks!

Re: Weird samba unicode issue (not working for linux)

some updates ...

It seems that those foreign characters only show up correctly in windows explorer, garbage in telnet, ftp, and browser.

Now I had a problem changing the language setting in Easy Search util, it wouldn't do anything. Could that be the root of my problem - I was using Western European for my system default not the locale that matches my characterset?

You need to set your telnet (for example: putty) use UTF-8 encode as well.

Re: Weird samba unicode issue (not working for linux)

Thanks for the hint!

I was using SecureCRT and have set UTF-8 for character encoding. For whatever reason, it's not working. When I tried with putty now, everything is showing up correctly.

Although I'm still puzzled why my SecureCRT is handling the share mounted from a Windows box just fine.
