upnp av receiver (connect dns-323 to tv)

Hi All,

Has anyone used any upnp av media players to stream data from their dns-323 to their tv? I'm looking for a upnp av media receiver to link my dns-323 to my tv but can't seem to find any products I like... has anybody got any recommendations?

Cheers,

Haydn.

Hi,
I use a Pineacle Showcenter SC 200 - it accesses the UPNP server. It is  ok - not  very
comfort  but stable.

regards

My DLink DSM300 (now superceded by DSM320) works fine streaming from the DNS323.

I have a dsm-520 and a pinnacle sc 200. It's annoying that the built-in upnp server doesn't support subtitles, so i don't use it much with the dsm (but plays perfectly, no problems and i still think the dsm is more user friendly than the sc). Now running oxyl on the dns (aside from the upnp) and this works like a charm with the SC. no need to refresh the contents and even when i plug in an external drive i can directly play all the files on the drive. With oxyl, my files play very well and server displays subtitles (only on sc, of  dsm doesn't support that kind of server).
Build quality of  both the devices are excellent, but not a lot of support (d-link with all of products, imho).

Re: upnp av receiver (connect dns-323 to tv)

I have a D-Link DSM-320 and it did not work and play well with the built in UPnP AV server on the DNS-323.  On the music end the DSM-320 wouldn't recognize a standard .m3u playlist.  On the video side, it played choppy video and would eventually lockup my DSM-320 to the point I had to unplug the power cord.  D-Link user support was very frustrating to deal with and no help.

Finally, I bit the bullet and paid for Twonkymedia and installed it on the DNS-323.  Very easy to install if you have your box fun plugged with telnet already setup.  All the problems I had with the built in UPnP AV server went away with Twonkymedia.

Re: upnp av receiver (connect dns-323 to tv)

I'm using the DSM-520 with my DNS-323.  However, I had issues with the built-in upnp software on the DNS-323.  Video would play, pause for a few seconds, play, pause, etc.  So I installed Twonky on the DNS-323 and everything works fine.

However, I think I would like to replace my DSM-520 later this year with something that supports H.264, perhaps the DSM-750.

Re: upnp av receiver (connect dns-323 to tv)

The Mediagate MG-35 is pretty good. I just got it working. It works with samba shares (no AV UPNP client though). However, the front end interface is not the prettiest, but it is a very small form factor. I use mine without a hard drive in it. Also, you have to fun_plug and telnetd your DNS because it has two hard coded username/passwords  media/gate and guest/[null] (as in no password) and the DNS only supports 5-8 character passwords. It also had embedded linux (I think is uclinux or whatever it's called) and there is a modified firmware load floating around that makes the interface look much better and gets you telnet access (much like our very dear DNS.) There is also an newer 802.11b/g wireless version but I don't know if it is similar with the smb shares or not. The new one also is supposed to handle HD better (maybe a more powerful processor? don't know), but the one I have does display HD via component (which is the way I have it hooked up.)

The other method I used was a P4 older pc with a live distro of Geexbox (geexbox.org) and a remote control package. It ran off the CD ROM. It works with AV UPNP servers, but as we all know the DNS one sux. I had it working off the samba shares. It too has an OK interface (meaning a little meh), but it handled a little more codecs than the mediagate.

Just my 2 cents..
