Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

Hi Guys,
Hope you can help, I'm desperate
Total newbe on Linux and hacking I still need to get Telnet working in order to install Twonky DLNA support.
I used the 0.3 funplug from http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fun-plug/ and altered the funplug file according to Another Telnet daemon subsection at http://www.shadowandy.net/_html/archives/tech/dns323/
It is about here that my knowledge gap starts showing.
1. Is it true that just by putting the funplug file and the funplug.tar file into (in my case) \\192.168.1.9\Volume_1 through ftp the DNS-323 in some mysterious way starts unpacking and installing the files after reboot? I fear that this is not the root of the system but I can not find any other place to put the file (tried to ftp \\192.168.1.9 folder but couldn't be accessed).
2. I tried to telnet the ip address after reboot but no telnet response so I guess nothing has happened.
3. When looking around in other topics it seems that other people can actually "see" the linux environment from a windows client. How is that achieved.
OK guys, what basic knowledge am I missing here? Hope you can help me out and gently guide me into the fanastic world of Linux.
Thanks!

Hi slipperman,
Hope this helps, I got mine yesterday and I was down about the same path as yours... was hacking my way to get this done way pass midnite while watching France beat NZ in the IRB World Cup. I hope this would help you get this right.

- I'm using firmware v1.03... yours should be the same or a version earlier as yours has got Volume_1 as the disk identifier. I did the same thing as you that when I got the funplug script I alter it. Not sure what you changed, by for me I changed the variable to refer to Volume_1 - boy, that didn't work and I wonder what went wrong for some good hours. Finally what I did is I just drop the script and the tar file that's it. No editing necessary. I don't have time though to find a way why I don't need to change the path but everything is good. Give it a try - download, unpack then just drop the 2 files in your root directory. Use ftp and set it to bin mode. I use filezilla if you want to try a GUI tool.

- It's not mysterious at all, the explaination is in the wiki... I think Dlink decides to have this function to get this device a larger appeal and maybe to help fix problems that they don't have time to work on - speculation on my part ... anyway, you're right - drop it under \\your NAS ip\Volume_1 ... reboot, you're good to go.
2. I tried to telnet the ip address after reboot but no telnet response so I guess nothing has happened.
- You should get a prompt, give the first step a try.
3. When looking around in other topics it seems that other people can actually "see" the linux environment from a windows client. How is that achieved.
- I believe this is via telnetting from windows command line... unless you're referring to dmesg - that's linux kernel messages that gets loged along the way. That would be something useful once you hv your telnet ready.
Hope this helps.

Hello azri (and possibly others)
No luck I'm afraid. (Bond on tv...)
1. Yes, using 1.03.
2. Removed the fun_plug and .tar file and downloaded a fresh version. Rebooted. Nothing, tried to telnet but no contact on telnet port 23. Tried telnet on port 21 which opened ftp session.
3. Removed fun_plug and .tar file again and follow the wiki version instead (home made fun_plug in root directory, starttelnet.sh in root directory, busybox 3 and utelnetd in lnx_bin folder), rebooted and tried to communicate on telnet port 23. Nothing.
4. Opened/redirected port 23 in DIR-655 router and used the internet address to try to telnet that ip-equivalent (as I successfully has done with ftp/port 21 traffic. No telnet response.
OK, in the instructions of http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fun-plug/0.3/ there is a note about upgrade procedure of funplug and renaming old directories through telnet. OK, if something went wrong here does that mean I have directories hidden in Linux area (or whatever the correct naming may be). If so, how the f... will I remove/rename these if I dont get telnet up?
Getting a bit bored by this now, maybe I just purchase myself out of this misery and purchase nas with telnet. After all, I just want to get support for DLNA so I can stream media to my PS3 from a NAS....
Is there any other way of telling whether or not the fun_plug installation was successful (apart from telnetting)? Can any other of the native servers be interfering with telnet?
Bleeding lost here. Even tried to put the NAS on a DMZ just to check if there was a port issue. Still not a sound. Is the problem due to that I'm using RAID1 config (looked in fun_plug and saw that there were two discs referenced...
Do I sound confused? Correct!

When you unpacked fun_plug and the .tar, what program did you use? I hope it wasn't with WinZip?
(you should use something like WinRAR that doesn't mangle UNIX text files)

Winzip it was! I must try with another unzipper pack. Hang on...
JEEEZZZ! It worked right away. Downloaded Winrar and unpacked the funplug kit, restarted the 323 and telnetted. Results: happy macintosh (or rather Busybox v1.6.1 ....
Installed twonky in notime and now I'm streaming my MP3:s and pictures to my PS3 like a charm!! Will evaluate the Twonky and then purchase after the trial period.
Thanks ever so much MiK! Sending lots of virtual beer!
