Direct Connect as a USB drive?

Hi
Newbie here. I just ordered a DNS 323 and should be getting it soon, along with two Seagate 500GB drives.

Now, I have this DVD Player...a Phillips DVP 5982. It has a USB port on it, and you can attach any FAT32 drive to it. It will read DIVX, MP3, JPG files off the drive.

Ideally, I'd like to connect the DNS 323 to the DVD player, but I know this pretty much can't work, since I can't see any way to direct connect any computer to the drive via USB and access it as a USB drive. Secondly, since the DVD player can only read FAT32, and the drives are EXT2/3,  it's a seemingly moot point anyway.

After reading up a bit, I've come up with a scenario that may or may not work, and I'd like your input on it.

1) The DNS323 can be configured to mount an external USB drive, and read and write to it.
2) The DNS323 can be connected to a USB hub
3) If I set up a hub with the following on it: DVD player, DNS 323, 250GB FAT32 external USB hard drive

Can I then copy files from the DNS323 to the external USB hard drive, and in turn, have that drive accesible to the DVD player, because it's conencted to hub?

Hope this makes sense. I know it's kind of a strange idea, but let me know what you thinkof it.

Re: Direct Connect as a USB drive?

From what you describe, the DVD player acts as the master, and the DNS323 will also act as a master.
So your 250GB drive is available to either the DNS323 OR the DVD player... but not both simulaneously.

You would need a USB sharing hub (google "USB Sharing").  you may end up manually switching between DVD and DNS323.  You should also investigate if you need to mount/unmount the 250GB drive from the DNS323 before switching.
