I just started transfering about 12GB of data from my DNS to PC's HD. PC is a new dual core with Vista, and connection is 100Mb lan. In my DNS I have 2 Samsung 400GB's configured to RADI1.
Transfer speed seems to be only ~1MB/sec, is this really normal?? I would have thought that thru 100Mb lan I would get closer to 10MB/sec of real transfer rate, but why it isn't so?

Hmmm... strange; after 15mins transfer ratio suddenly jumpedup to 4.5MB/sec! And I don't have any other PC's on my network that could have slowed the transfer. Is this normal, what's happening??

Transfer speed can be limited by any number of things - the network speed is only one of them - by the way - in my experience, you're not going to see much more than about 8MB/s on a 100 mbps LAN
You're copying data from one disk through the disk interface, through the network interface, across the network, through the second network interface, through the second disk interface on to the second disk.
You need to consider disk rotational speed & disk interface speed at both ends along with disk fragmentation levels - and - this is where I suspect your problem could be - file sizes - transferring a give quantity of data comprised of a large number of small files always takes longer than the same quantity of data contained in a single file. The disk head thrashes between the data areas on the disk and the allocation table area of the disk - it has to update the allocation tables as each file is written.

I get 8-9MB/s read/write speed with 100Mbps LAN. With Gigabit network and jumbo frame enabled, I am able to get about 25MB/s read and 18MB/s write speed with the DNS(18MB/s read and 15MB/s write without jumbo frame). But it seems either the CPU or/and the SATA controller is the bottleneck here, and there isn't much you can do about it.
