How can I tell if my drives are really set to raid1

I just got this device, bought 2 WD sata 320 gig drives, set the format to raid 1, I saw no option at this time for ext2 or 3 so I proceeded with defaults.
After restarted when I entered configuration the only option was to reformat standard (individual discs) there was no other options. So I did. then after another restart when I went into configuration I saw the normal menu of options. When I map the device I see volume one a 320 gig drive. When I look in config/tools/raid  Standrd is selected and all others are greyed out. Is this normal? I did upgrade the firmware to 1.03 before the second format.
TIA,

Re: How can I tell if my drives are really set to raid1

I think I answered my own question, I copied a large file to the volume1 shut it down, pulled both hard drives and one and a time booted them up as secondaries with puppy linux, one drive i could see the file fine the other drive made some bad noises and was not detected. I think I recieved one bad drive from newegg. thanks for looking. one other question though. are drives hot swappable in this device or should i allways shut it down first?
thanks

Always shut it down first.
