Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

Coming from RAID1 and setting up Chumbie's backup

Hi Chumby,
Thank you very much for your great tutorial. I tried it last night and after all it went fine. Some things I want to mention for the special case that you start with RAID1:

My DNS 323 ran fw 1.04 and RAID1. I backed up all data, startet with the admin page and "broke the mirror" (tools->RAID), i.e. chose standard configuration. That required to format both hard drives. Formatting stopped at 94% with no more action possible (no formal success, no message).
I powered down the device and removed the hard drive from the LHS. On reboot the admin page required to format the hard drive in RHS drive bay which went fine and displayed the success message at the end. I copied some data to the hard drive just for identification purposes. Then I inserted the LHS hard drive. On next reboot my DNS seemed to have heavy hard drive traffic. When I logged in to the admin page I saw that all old data and old network shares were still available (obviously formatting in the first step was not successful). So I powered down the DNS and removed the RHS hard drive. On next reboot I went to the admin page and formatted the LHS hard drive which ended successfully. My only concern was that it was labelled "Volume_1" as the RHS hard drive. When I inserted also my first hard drive into the RHS bay the latter was re-labelled "Volume_2". So I had "Volume_1" on the left hand side and "Volume_2" on the right hand side. In order to follow your tutorial correctly I changed the two hard drives and after the next reboot I thought everything is now fine. But when I tried to install fun plug 0.3 it failed on "Volume_1". When I tried to install it on "Volume_2" everything went fine. I was a little bit confused about the "right hand side" and "left hand side" and the corresponding volumes but as long as it works ... Your "editcron.sh" remains the same but the effect is now (on my system): All data on Volume_2 is copied to the backup drive on Volume_1. This worked fine last night with my test data - so I think no need to worry.

Or do you see any issues with the interchanged hard drives?
Thank you again for the great work!

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

plelvis,

Do you remember if you used Fonz's funplug 0.3 or funplug 0.4 ?
I am about to set up this backup routine but still need to know if I need to use 0.3 or if 0.4 will work.

I have upgraded the firmware on my dns-323s to 1.04.  All upgrades have gone ok.
It went better than upgrading the Netgear router firmware . . . fortunately I had made backup of its settings ahead of time.  Will stand on right leg next time.

I note that on firmware 1.03 there is a hidden directory   .lpd
And on firmware 1.04 a new directory has turned up in addition to this.
It is called   .systemfile

I use funplug 0.4 and the procedure works very nicely

Great.  Thank you for the info.
Now setting up my units with FF 0.4, and following the tutorial will be my job for the weekend.

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

Hang on... Raid 1 is unreliable, so copy drive 1 to drive 2 every so often as a backup.

Tell me again why I bought a DNS-323 instead of a couple of cheap USB drive boxes?

Is there anyone else who thinks this thread is a little strange?

Well to me the CH3SNAS is a lot more then just storage, otherwise usb boxes would have been enough. But usb boxes can't be connected to the network, they don't have a mediaserver, ftp server, webserver etc.

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

I haven't read the entire thread, but I think it's more to do with Raid 1 providing redundancy and availability versus data backup.  Some people who purchase this NAS do not require redundancy as much as a means to store and backup data.

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

Well, a couple of cheap USB drive boxes can't do NAS.

I don't use RAID1 on the DNS-323 myself, so I can't comment on whether it's reliable. RAID1 and copying drive 1 to drive 2 are not equivalent anyway.

RAID1 gives you 24/7 availability of your data seamlessly in the event of a hard disk failure. Copying drive 1 to drive 2, depending on copy intervals, gives you a backup copy of the data in case you accidentally delete/overwrite/corrupt your original copy. RAID1 can't help you there since its data is always mirrored.

Of course if the interval is too short, you lose some of the benefit because it may take you a while to realize something is wrong with the original copy, which has unfortunately been replicated already.

(Just a tip--you can get around this limitation by using rsnapshot http://www.rsnapshot.org/ or BackupNetClone http://backupnetclone.sourceforge.net/ .)

Hi Biscotte,
I used funplug 0.3 in order not to deal with potential problems - since the tutorial is written for funplug 0.3 and I did not want to try if there are any differences ...
Firmware is 1.04. And my "problem" is not really a problem - my volumes just got the inverted names (Volume_1 is mounted at /mnt/HD_b2 and is my backup device, Volume_2 is mounted at /mnt/HD_a2 and is my data device incl. fun_plug).

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

Hi Guys,

Glad to see you guys are getting great use of this... remember that mig, dkl and fonz worked out all the techo stuff... I just compiled their thoughts into this tutorial...

I have updated the tutorial to reflect that it works fine with Firmware 1.04 and Fun Plug 0.4

Happy Backups...

Cheers
Chumby.

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

Ok, I'm a noob here, but I finaly got the backup working.
But not after the first schedule didn't work last night.

I found out through the log file, that the rsync couldnt be found in the bin directory.
And offcourse it wasn't there.

Read through the manual several times, looked at  fonz's open directory and puzzled the pieced together.

Maybe the manual needs some updating with the folowing code that auto-installs the rsync program.

Code:

cd /mnt/HD_a2
mkdir tmp
cd tmp
wget http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fun-plug/0.4/addons/rsync-2.6.9.tgz
funpkg.sh rsync-2.6.9.tgz

After this, I could manually test the backup procedure by typing in

Code:

/mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug.d/bin/rsync -rlptDv --delete /mnt/HD_a2 /mnt/HD_b2 >/mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug.d/log/rsync.last.log 2>&1

So the real advantage of using this backup procedure over Raid1 is that there now are two volumes where one can be hidden for the network, by removing the share, so a malicous program (or user) cannot delete/corrupt the data?
In my case I didn't hide the share, but gave the entire disk only 1 readonly share for 1 group of users. (admins)
Is that safe enough?
Also does any1 know at wich speeds the disks are copying the data?
Using the cron, I could schedule a more frequent update, so the disk is more up-to-date. ig. every 2 hours?

It was a rough start, but I'm loving my Conceptronic CH3SNAS (2x 750GB Samsung F1)

Hi Deadbeef,

Thanks for this update.  I am curious that knireis seemed to get things working fine with funplug 0.4 but you had to go through the procedure described above.

Fonz... could you shed any light on this perhaps?

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

I've checked funplug 0.4 tar file. It doesn't include rsync... (for obvious version reasons), but an instruction how to install rsync AND that it's an mandatory add-on for the backup procedure should be present in the manual. </return to breakfast>

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

Hi Deadbeef & knireis,

I have the official word from fonz:

"rsync is automatically installed with 0.3 fun_plug.tar. In 0.4, rsync is an add-on. In 0.5, smile, rsync is again part of the install tarball."

I have updated the tutorial to reflect this and included the add-on procedure (0.4) outlined above.

Thanks for your input!

Thanks

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

Just take out the line you added into Cron.  (Use the VI editor as explained in the tutorial).  This will stop it completely if this is what you wish to do.

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

Hi

Using version 1.04 I have setup the following:

WDD 750G drives mirrored using Raid1.

I would like to backup all my data everyday to a new directory.  So if someone deletes a file I have a 7 day window of getting it back.

volume_1\backup\mon
volume_1\backup\tue
volume_1\backup\wed
volume_1\backup\thu
volume_1\backup\fri
volume_1\backup\sat
volume_1\backup\sun

volume_1\data

I have setup 7 weekly schedules to backup my data for everyday of the week eg: mon,tue etc....  So I backup volume_1\data to the correct volume_1\backup\day folder.

Now the problem I have is that if the DNS-323 is in power saving mode (both disks go to sleep) the schedules don’t work.   If I turnoff the power saving the backups work.  Does anyone know if DLink are going to fix the current buggy firmware?

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

I haven't seen any problems running cron jobs on my unit when the disks are spun down, but I have them in Standard (separate, non-RAID) mode.

On a different note, you might consider using something like BackupNetClone (http://backupnetclone.sourceforge.net/) instead of your setup.  That way you won't be relying on the DNS-323 software RAID, and you'll get more backup snapshots and have more room for your data than with your setup.

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

I'm completely stuck and I'm a noob so bear with me please.

I copied the exact code to create the editcron.sh and only changed the rsync command for my setup. My rsync.last.log displays this:
rsync: Failed to exec ssh: No such file or directory (2)
rsync error: error in IPC code (code 14) at pipe.c(86) [sender=2.6.9]
rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes [sender]: Broken pipe (32)
rsync error: error in IPC code (code 14) at io.c(1122) [sender=2.6.9]

The odd thing is, if I do crontab -l and paste the output after the 5 2 * * * and execute it, it runs perfectly. The rsync line is:

/mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug.d/bin/rsync -avz --rsync-path=/raid/data/module/RSYNC/system/bin/rsync -e ssh -i /mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug.d/home/root/.ssh/authorized_keys /mnt/HD_a2/users/ user@192.168.x.x:/raid/data/users >/mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug.d/log/rsync.last.log 2>&1

It seems like it's something minor since pasting this output works, but won't when crontab runs it...anyone have an idea?

Thanks a bunch.

Re: Tutorial: Backup Everything from Vol A to Vol B once a night

I get an error message in the logging of funplug

rsync: readlink "/mnt/HD_a2/Video/2006-01-03 - Mirror" failed: Input/output error (5)

When I logging to putty and try to rm -rf the folder 2006-01-03 it gives the error
rm: cannot remove '2006-01-03/sdf': Directory not empty
rm: cannot stat '2006-01-03/sdf/56.jpg': Input/output error

There is no file 56.jpg in that directory.

What is wrong and how can I correct this.

Chumby - thanks for the tutorial!

The only thing I have to add/note is that I'm using fun_plug 0.5 and with your instructions, I had to replace

Code:

fun_plug.d

with

Code:

ffp

.

Hi emartin24... thanks for that little one.

Are you indicating changing all references of fun_plug.d with ffp?  I haven't used fp .5 yet.

The 'ffp' is only for 0.5.  'fun_plug.d' is for previous editions.
