DNS-323 with 2x Seagate 7200.10 500gb, fan keep reving to full speed.

Hi all, I got the DNS-323 a few weeks ago and put two seagate hard drive in RAID 1. I have the unit next to my computer desk and it's so loud. When it first starts up it's okay. But after a little while, even with very minimal use, the fan ramps up to ~6400 rpm and it becomes annoying. It's not so much the fan itself but you can hear the jet-engine like whoosh of the airflow. (My room is small and quiet so the effect is probably amplified). The fan doesn't seem to go down again. Or it might after a long time.

My temps are 111F/44C and my room temp is what i would describe as average... (i don't have a thermometer in here to take accurate). I'm thinking either 1. The fancontrol of the DNS-323 is messed up... or maybe 2. The Seagates run too hot for this type of enclosure.

Does anyone else out there have 7200.10 drives in their DNS? Does it run hot? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I have 2 7200.10 drives (Seagate Barracuda ES 7200.10 ST3250620NS 250GB) in RAID 1
My fanspeed (# fanspeed g) is ~4000 and my system temps (via webpage) are 116F / 47C,
ambient room temp ~70F.  My DNS-323 is really quiet; however, it is located ~5 feet away
from my keyboard and monitor.

DNS-323 • 2x Seagate Barracuda ES 7200.10 ST3250620NS 250GB SATAII (3.0Gb/s) 7200RPM 16MB • RAID1 • FW1.03 • ext2

Yeah, ~4000rpm is a totally managable and a huge difference. At this very moment mine is showing the same as yours. I have 4028rpm with 116F. But I don't know how long it will stay like this. I just really hate it when it revs up to 6000rpm. sad

I've saw someone did a mod where they gut the guard off the fan and widened the whole a little bit to reduce air noise. I'm thinking of possibly doing that. But I'm still curious if these hard drives just run hot. Perhaps if I put in a different brand of hard drives the unit fan will stay at a low speed more often? Anyone know if the Seagates are hotter than most other hard drives?

I have the same two drives as you, but my setup isn't as hot - 98F/37C, fanspeed reports 2700.  However, my DNS-323 lives in the basement, next to the wireless router - it's nice and cool down there smile

I also have 2 500GB seagate barracuda's and my fan is barely audible... although the disks themselves are pretty noisy under load (horrible clunky type noises)... I was so worried about the nas I chose being quiet I forgot to think about the disks! oh well...
