Locating a new folder in root directory

Hi all!  I just took delivery of my DNS-323 and got it up and mapped without any problems. I was therefore full of anticipation of a completely smooth set up when I hit that brickwall I have got to know so well over my years of using technology...

I bought the DNS-323 to act as a 'back-up only' machine to receive transfers from another RAID device that I have installed in my home/office network.  This device has a built in FTP client which will carry out auto scheduled backups to a server.  To do this is it needs a folder specifically named 'nsync' located on the server (the DNS-323).  I have set this up and confirmed via a test function on the client that I have a good FTP connection to the DNS-323 however the client generates an error message that indicates that it cannot find the 'nsync' folder on the DNS-323.

Within it's FTP configuration setup the client offers provision for setting only the IP address of the DNS-323 & NOT the full directory path of the 'nsync' folder I created.  This makes me wonder (as it is not stated anywhere in particular) that the 'nysnc' folder needs to be located in the root directory of the DNS-323.

To clarify I CAN input (into the client FTP settings) the DNS-323 location as follows:
xxx.xxx.xx.xxx

but NOT
xxx.xxx.xx.xxx/Volume_1/nsync/

On initial set up, my DNS-323 (and I assume everyone else's) set up a folder named 'Volume_1' by default. I can write to that folder and that is where I placed my 'nsync' sub-folder.

Whilst using a 3rd party FTP client I have tried to:

a) create a folder in the location - xxx.xxx.xx.xxx/nsync/
b) set CHMOD permissions (777) to write to the top level/root directory in the DNS-323

I always get the following error messages respectively:

a) 550 nsync: Permission denied
b) SITE CHMOD 777 ': command not understood

My set up is:

Server - DNS-323 - (2) WD 750 GB / RAID 0 / No plugins installed
Client - Thecus N5200
Windows XP SP2 PC
GigaBit LAN
network / server knowledge level - beginner

If any one could shed any light on the problem or even how to make it go away completely I would greatly appreciate it.  If I can't get this function to work it will be eBay-bound for my DNS-323

Thanks in advance of any help offered.

Regards
Marty

Re: Locating a new folder in root directory

have you created this 'nsync' folder within the root of the FTP site on the dns323?

index monkey,

Hey.  Thx for the reply.

I could not find a service within the DNS-323 web GUI to create/delete folders so I assume the only way to do so is via FTP.  When I created the 'nsync' folder via FTP the highest level I could create it at was below 'Volume_1' ie:

xxx.xxx.xx.xxx/Volume_1/~

In my ignorance I assume that is not the root level but one level below it...?

I have configured the DNS-323 FTP access to the root for a 'group' and then a 'user' within that group.  The FTP ACCESS LIST on the FTP SERVER SETTINGS page is:

Path = DNS-323_SHARE
User/Group = ftpaccess
R/W = (ticked)

Regards
Marty

Re: Locating a new folder in root directory

xxx.xxx.xx.xxx/Volume_1/ is the root of HDD1 (aka /mnt/HD_a2/)
xxx.xxx.xx.xxx/Volume_2/ is the root of HDD2 (aka /mnt/HD_b2/)

Re: Locating a new folder in root directory

My advice is to enable and use telnet as described here in the forum to get an overview
over the directory structure of the box. Within the telnet session the commands "ls" and
"cd" are your best friends smile

Re: Locating a new folder in root directory

Check the ftp settings on the dns to see what path the ftp site is on, then with your computer create the 'nsync' folder there.
If you FTP manually onto the dns can you see the 'nsync' folder you created?

As I suspected...

transstilben - thanks I successfully set up and initiated a telnet session.  I had a poke around the file structure but to be honest I felt like a 4 yr old walking around a kindergarden with a loaded gun... clueless but lethal.  I just do not know enough about command line protocols to do anything sensible

index monkey - my DNS-323 FTP Settings are (per my last post):

Path = DNS-323_SHARE  (this was automatically set by the DNS-323 when I chose 'root' as the share)
User/Group = ftpaccess
R/W = (ticked)

Yes, I can see the 'nsync' folder both via Windows file explorer and an FTP client.

I just can't place the 'nsync' folder at the same level in the directory as 'Volume_1' which is where it needs to be. I have also tried renaming Volume_1, but I get 'permission denied' errors and I am denied from changing the permissions also.

Maybe I am just trying to get this particular NAS to do something it just won't do without a bunch of hacking (that I'm not confident in doing).  hmm

"I just can't place the 'nsync' folder at the same level in the directory as 'Volume_1' which is where it needs to be."

You definitely do no want this! Volume_1 (HD_a2) is the mount point for the physical hard disk - if you create the nsync folder at that level it would be in the dns's memory instead of disk!

What you need to do is change the ftp server path for the ftpaccess user on the dns-323 to Volume_1 (/mnt/HD_a2) so that when you ftp to the dns you get directly to the disk and nsync will be in the root directory of the ftp server - not the physical server. Unfortunately I'm not at home at the minute and my dns isn't turned on (my cleaner keeps switching plug sockets off!!) so I can't check how you do this atm. If it's not answered before I get a chance to look at my dns-323 I'll post back later.

Re: Locating a new folder in root directory

what account are you using to logon to the dns ftp site? and does it have permissions on the volume1 share and the 'rsync' folder you are trying to copy to? just as HaydnH is saying really.  ps, HaydnH - by cleaner do you mean your mom! smile
