hdparm commands for hd controls?

hi:

Just wondering if there is anyway to implement features such as those available in hdparm to send controlling commands to the hard drives, such as turning on and off the acoustic management, etc.?

Just thought maybe someone has tried this already.

Thanks.

Re: hdparm commands for hd controls?

Hey:

I installed Fonz's fun_plug package, and in the telnet I found hdparm command to be present. However I can't seem to figure out the device name. I thought it would be something like:

hdparm -i hda

but hda doesn't seem to exist. I'm quite a newbie at this. Any help? Maybe even the ID of the hard drive would be nice so I can at least try to apply hdparm commands on them.

Thanks.

Re: hdparm commands for hd controls?

hdparm -I /dev/sda (for the first disk) - sdb/c/d for the other one (I have DNS-313 with one disk only, don't know how the second one is connected).

Unfortunately, the architecture of DNS-xxx boxes is much different than a standard PC, and most hdparm settings return an error

It's not that different - the disk device names are different because the disks are SATA, and not PATA or IDE, as a result of this linux treats them as SCSI disks, which is exactly what it would do on a PC with SATA drives.

Note - it is often possible to configure the BIOS on a PC so that SATA disks appear as ATA, and this is frequently done to get around driver issues, however this is a translation and native mode operation will allow better performance.

Re: hdparm commands for hd controls?

Well I just tried
hdparm -I /dev/sda

and I get this message:

hdparm: HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(identify): Invalid Argument

Looks like the drive is correctly identified, but then the command for some reason that comes with BusyBox 1.6.1 isn't recognized. Maybe there's something about that.

Pity. If hdparm works there are so many things one can do with the HD with just scripts, aren't there?

Re: hdparm commands for hd controls?

Any news about this subject (6 years later)?

I also got: "hdparm: HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(identify): Invalid Argument" on a DNS-323
