Hello,
I have unsuccessfully been trying to solder the wires on the board. I am afraid that I have damaged it so I can't connect the serial connector. Fortunately the unit is still working.
I am wondering if there is any chance to load the firmware through the web interface. I have been reading the thread of the new firmware and, at least for me, it is not clear if it is possible or not.

You can load it form web interface, actually this is the only way to load firmware image (u-boot images are the one you can load from serial). But there is high chance that you brick your device and will still end up soldering serial port or buying new device.
For now I highly suggest that you wait till custom firmware will get more mature and more tested. There is no real reason to use custom firmware now because you wont profit from it much.

Hello,
I maybe wrong. But what I really need is to be able to change the kernel. I want to convert the DSM into a gateway among other services. To connect it to the Internet I have to make a dhclient over an interface.
[root@DSM-G600 modules]# dhclient eth0 Internet Software Consortium DHCP Client 2.0pl5 Copyright 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 The Internet Software Consortium. All rights reserved. Please contribute if you find this software useful. For info, please visit http://www.isc.org/dhcp-contrib.html socket: Protocol not available - make sure CONFIG_PACKET and CONFIG_FILTER are defined in your kernel configuration! exiting.
In fact CONFIG_FILTER is off in the tool chain kernel. I presume that similar things will be necessary, for install to install iptables.

The problem with loading non-D-Link firmware is that we don't really have a good way to really test it. So if a problem slips through you could brick your hardware and the only way out is to use the serial port. So it really is not safe at this time to load non-standard firmware unless you have a serial console.

Yes we'll need a firmware test. I don't know if it is possible to find a kexec patch for the dsmg600 kernel but it would be a great issue ...
Take a look at
