my printer is not recognized

Hi,

My DNS-323 could not recognize my Brother HL-1440. The status page shows:
Manufacturer:      None
Product:     None

But it can recognize my other printer "Lexmark 2400".

Any idea?

Re: my printer is not recognized

I've got the same problem with the Brother HL-1430 that is connected to my CH3SNAS - it just won't show up under "Printer Info" in the "Status" page. sad

I'd be thankful for any piece of advice...

Re: my printer is not recognized

I wonder if there's a way to find out whether the device is not recognized at all or if it is just not recognized as a printer.

Re: my printer is not recognized

If you have fun_plug loaded you can examine the dmesg.out file - this should show some information relating to what was detected on the USB port - I'd also like to take this opportunity to point out that not all printers will work with a print server, but that I suspect it may be possible to get a printer that is not recognized by the DNS-323 to work with it.

Search the forum - there are a couple of threads pertaining to printers not functioning (as different to not being recognized) with details on how to create the missing /.lpd folder (if you're running fw 1.04) and to redirect the port on Windows to the DNS-323.

If you don't find what you need let me know - I'm a little pressed for time right now, I could locate the threads and provide links later on - perhpas during the evening.

Re: my printer is not recognized

Thanks, I'll check the dmesg.out. Im running a CH3SNAS with the the most recent firmware 1.3

I know that not all printers are working, but I think I've read that someone got it to work with a DNS323 and it also is compatible to other printservers. It is sold as a GDI device, but unter Linux it is usually recognized as a PCL printer.

I've already looked through the other printer related threads, but as you said they deal with different issues. Except for gengfang's post I have not found a single note throughout the web about printers not being recognized at all by the DNS323 / CH3SNAS.

Re: my printer is not recognized

If you have a printer that is not working please do provide the dmesg.out. Any information can be useful in fixing compatibility since we are unable to test all printers on the market wink.

After plugging in the printer dsmeg.out says:

Re: my printer is not recognized

OK - I'm not familiar with the CH3NAS - but - we'll proceed on the basis that it is similar to the DNS-323, and you can work out the differences as they relate to the different firmware.

See the instructions in this thread - http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t1943-cann … 10%29.html - posts #2 & #7

Re: my printer is not recognized

The CH3SNAS is very similar, the hardware is identical and the firmware is very very similar. I'll give your approach a shot as soon as I find the time, probably this weekend.

Considering the dmesg output I assume the chances are not very good though, it looks as if the NAS has a serious problem initializing the printer.

Re: my printer is not recognized

Also try connecting it through a USB 1.1 hub.  Some full speed USB devices do not work with the DNS HW A1, which I think is what the CH3SNAS has (though I have never seen one).  Anyway, the error you are getting (-71) is the same that some USB 2.0 flash drives and hard drives get on the old hardware, and they are corrected by slowing them down with a hub.

Re: my printer is not recognized

If I'm not mistaken the HL-1430 is a USB 1.1 device, but going through a hub might be worth a try - thanks a lot

Re: my printer is not recognized

Hope you can help me in the future. I've got a post and you may know the answer. Unlike others, I won't play games and send you off to websites.

Anyway, your printer problems has to do with type of laser printers.

Most laser printers, like the lexmark mentioned above, have Fonts built-in. These printers can stand alone and as long as the server (PC) can build a print job, the printer's print engine will handle it from there. These printer's print engine work very nicely with non-Microsoft OSs; namely Linux, and therefore are the USB printers which have no problem reporting to the server PC.

Other printers are "GUI/GDI" printers with very little (if any) brains about print jobs or anything. They are built to only be driven by specialized "GUI/GDI" aware programs. These, ofor obvious reasons, are the most in-expensive of all of the lasers you could possibly buy. And, most (if not all) will NOT work in a Linux environment; especially this one.

Advice, look for a laser that has its own fonts and is NOT a GUI-GDI laser printer. Most (if not all) of these will work very nicely with the way you're trying to use your NAS.

Re: my printer is not recognized

Try searching this forum using the keyword GDI.

You'll find several threads, one of which includes instructions on downloading the fonts (or firmware) to a GDI printer, in this case an HP - I'll also point out that I have personally used the method I provided a link to above with my own printer, which is also a GDI printer (a Samsung) without having to download fonts to it.

Yes - I acknowledge that GDI printers can be tricky to work with, especially when it comes to print servers - but, it should not be assumed that a printer can not be used with a print server simply because it is a GDI printer - and - for what it's worth the Brother 1440 does work with linux and, at least, based on this Brother driver download page would appear to be a PCL printer rather than a GDI printer.

One last thing - the Lexmark 2400 is a dot matrix printer - not a laser.

Unfortunately that doesn't help, thanks anyway.

I have not yet gotten my hands on a USB 1.1 hub, but I'll see to that

Re: my printer is not recognized

By the way, with you printer [plugged in, post your output from:

Code:

cat /proc/bus/usb/devices
