hi guys, i have had my DSM-G600, for a couple of months now... i have been using funplug to load gentoo in a chroot environment. i would like to load my custom kernel to have more control over it.
here are my questions:
Once you load your own kernel, is it possible to manipulate the wifi settings from inside the OS (gentoo) ? i mean can I for example use wpa_suplicant or use kismet or netstubler ? if not is it because of the NIC it self or because of the DSM-G600 ... cause you could always change the NIC.
with a USB NIC would I be able to do all this ?
are there any temperature sensors that can be read using lm_sensors ? is the speed of the fan controllable?

You will probably be able to get hdd temperature from smart. Internal 1gb lan is supported but wifi is not. You might be able to use some other card if you successfully compile a working module for it.

. so it is not likely to have wifi going even replacing the internal one with something linux supported ? how about the USB cards? same story?

If your wifi card (minipci or usb) has linux 2.4 driver sources, then you can build kernel modules on a separate machine (cross-compiling) using gcc-2.95 supplied -- see the way that the loader.o loadable kernel module is built http://dns323.kood.org/dsmg600/howto:loader_o
You could theoretically replace the wifi minipci card with something else that is "better" supported by kismet/stumbler,etc
The case fan speed is not detectable (as it just has power and no sensor feedback on board)
