Re: New DNS-323 Firmware V1.04B82 with release 12/28/2007

Never upgraded my firmware before - so I have a couple of noob questions.

I am on verion firmware 1.3.

Will it make me format my drives?  They are RAID 1 configured.  Should I take one of the drives out to save as a backup?  What will happen when I put it back in?

Will I have to load fun_plug and re-install debian or any of my apps?

Thanks for advise.

Re: New DNS-323 Firmware V1.04B82 with release 12/28/2007

Your welcome. Here's hoping someone who get's the next release will do the same.

I installed last night and had no issues. No format, no password problem, and streaming through Twonky minutes later. I've been upgrading my router and building a new Compaq server so I'm not beating on it as much as I normally would for testing but it seems fine so far. (Not using RAID so I can't say if it's an issue.)

All the HTTP screens are fine and working. Tested a few just to see if they worked after changes.

YMMV but it's already a step up from b63.

Thanks for the note Tilly.

Thanks for the note Tilly.

I´am also not using RAID because RAID-0/1 is not safe for me and last not least, with my synchro backupstrategy I don´t need RAID.

It is an honour for me if I can help a little with my bad english. smile

Hi all,

I have a question for the ones that have tested the newer firmwares. Is it now possible to assign different ftp access levels to one person?

thanks

NO!

One FTP user or group account name = one folder included subfolders

One FTP user or group account name = one user quota

And i am sure this will never change in the DNS-323 or DNS-323 firmware.

well then I suppose it is specific to my setup although never noticed this warning on previous firmware.

Otherwise it works fine.

Yes!

Yes!

Like others, and me!

Tilly, You just forgot to mention that you are NOT using RAID1 hence no error messages in your logs. (post #29)

Oh my, back to square one. Is anybody here who has disks of at least 750GB in capacity configured in RAID1 and is not getting the mdadm error message?

I have 2 500GB disks configured as RAID 0 (? striped, the "fast" one) and I also see the complaint that you mentioned at the end of the dmesg output. It looks like a harmless warning to me.

On the plus side, I can now access the DNS323 shares using a password from Vista Ultimate x64 Edition without changing the Vista configuration.

Regarding performance, on my 1GB switch the DNS323 performance is very similar to the 1.03 firmware. A question about performance - using a single connection to a network share from Vista to the DNS323 I can copy (write to the DNS323) at 18MB/sec (~160Mbps) but I can only read from it at 8MB/sec (~10Mbps). Reading with two connections the transfer speed goes up a little. Why is reading so slow?

I've just formatted the drives as two independent disks, and the read and write performance is exactly the same (again, only tested using a single connection). Is that expected? If it is, then I think I'll just use two independent volumes as it will be easier to get the data off the disks if the DNS323 dies.

The client machine is a Quad core machine with an Intel Pro GB NIC on the motherboard.

Re: New DNS-323 Firmware V1.04B82 with release 12/28/2007

When you discuss read & write speeds - so to speak in isolation - you can only see half the picture - you need to also consider the source/destination of the data.

A write to the DNS-323 is typically a read from some other source, and likewise a read from the DNS-323 wouldbe a write to some other destination - the read & write capabilities of the source & destination must be considered - in my tests, I've found that read speed is marginally better than write speed with the other end of the transfer being an IBM server known to be capable of accomodating transfers at close to twice that shown by the DNS-323- on GbE I've been able to get 160~170 Mbps, as recorded by SNMP counters at the network switch.

Transfer speeds are affected by such things as the rotational speed of the drives, the speed of the network itself, the speed of the expansion busses and the file sizes - a single 2GB file will result in a higher transfer than 1000 x 2MB files.

OK it seems that most people get slightly faster transfer reading from the DNS-323, so I'm surprised that my setup is 50% slower reading then writing. I tried a file transfer with my XP laptop which has much slower disks than the desktop, and I got about 13MB/sec in both directions. I'll ignore the problem on my desktop until the Vista service pack is released and then test again :-)

Re: New DNS-323 Firmware V1.04B82 with release 12/28/2007

Issues I've noticed with this firmware (1.04b82):

I reformatted my disks from a Raid 0 configuration to Standard (Individual Disks). I did this twice and the format operation seemed to lock the unit at 94% complete. The second time I guessed that only the second drive needed formatting, but again it locked at 94%, but after a reboot everything seemed to be fine. e2fsck reports no problems with the disk. (Searching for "94%" I see that this issue has been reported with previous versions of the firmware too ...)

The installed UPnP server still doesn't seem to work well with large music collections (and neither did the version with 1.03 firmware). I've got a ~7000 track library, but I can only browse 30 items in any list, for example, I can only see Artist names beggining with A. (I see fonz has a libupnp in his list of add ons: http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fun-plug/0.4-test/addons/ - would installing that help?) Is there a better UPnP server to install?

The web UI now won't let me enter certain characters - like ! - in any form input, which is annoying, as my Windows login password includes one of them ...

N00b questions:
1. Why do you need to stream through Twonky?
2. Why isn't the 1.04 firmware of any kind available on Dlink's US site?
3. Should I buy this over any other solution in this price range (like Synology DNS207)?

Thanks!

Only you can make that decision, based on the features and requirements you need.
smallnetbuilder has an in-depth review of each product

DS207 http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/29957/75/  (~$330 USD @newegg.com )

DNS-323 http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/29671/75/ (~$180 USD @newegg.com)

Re: New DNS-323 Firmware V1.04B82 with release 12/28/2007

1. Only way to stream to my Xbox360...at the moment. (Some here are near perfecting other solutions, one of which may support the 360 as well.)

2. These are beta...and from a D-Link site...just the German one. We assist each other in getting them here.

3. Up to you? How do we know...we bought and like the DNS-323. I have a HPmediavault as well which I use for business only. If I liked it better the DNS-323 would be for business use only. Do your homework based on what you want a NAS device for. Then make a list of the top three based on features you want and price.

Zen Seeker and MIG: First, thank you.

1. I thought that XBox360 could handle UPnP and the DNS-323 has it?
3. I realize it is up to me, I have done a lot of homework and it seems the DNS-323 is the best bang for the buck and can do almost everything the others can do.  Sounds like Twonky incurs and additional cost?

Zen Seeker - how do you like your HPmediavault?  I need a NAS for business too.  What is better about it, if I may ask?

Thanks!
B.

Unless they are posted accross the D-Link sites as the current public release they are beta are they not?

D-Link US, CA, shows v1.03 April 5th, 2007 as the last supported public release with DE @ v1.03 26-07-2007.

Anything higher than v1.03+ isn't a supported release and by default a beta release.

Re: New DNS-323 Firmware V1.04B82 with release 12/28/2007

1. I thought that XBox360 could handle UPnP and the DNS-323 has it?

A: No, not that simple....though it SHOULD be. None of the popular toys, PS3, Xbox360, Wii, are playing by the same rules. The Wii needs third party Mediacentre software, PS3 is trying to do it right but isn't there yet, and the 360 ONLY works with Twonky or Mediacentre at the moment. (This may have changed in the last month but not that I'm aware of.)

3. I realize it is up to me, I have done a lot of homework and it seems the DNS-323 is the best bang for the buck and can do almost everything the others can do.  Sounds like Twonky incurs and additional cost?

A: I also felt the DNS-323 was the best bang for the buck. Twonky works for free for a month but for some reason it resets it's counter every time the server is rebooted. Works for me...but if a free solution like MediaTomb doesn't support it soon I might just buy it.

Zen Seeker - how do you like your HPmediavault?  I need a NAS for business too.  What is better about it, if I may ask?

A: The HPMediavault is like the DNS-323 and has it's own hack site and supporters. I just found it to be more limited in options. It's a larger unit, about twice the size, but is very well made and of metal rather than plastic. That said it doesn't perform any better out of the box. The GUI interface is not as good, but does well enough. The fans tend to get loud once in a blue moon but that is the only complaint. I also like the fact that the smart switch will let it boot after a power outage unless the switch was in the off position prior to power restore.

In the end it seems better built, better power supply and cooling, but not as open to hacking and 3rd party support. (No fun_plug) I've installed Twonky on it and other Linux apps, following the guides and doing my own thing, but the DNS-323 seems better equipped for playing. But for business I want my data safe and strong while my media is on the lighter less hardy box.

Just my .02. I'm sure at least a few people will step up and say the opposite but this is my opinion.

Sorry, but you will or maybe you cannot understand!?

This ist a Beta Version: 104Beta.rar

But those like: NAS202B_DLINKEu_DNS323.1.04b61(1.29.1115.2007) or NAS202B_DLINKEu_DNS323.1.04b82(1.35.1228.2007) are NOT Beta versions!

As an example:

In Netherland D-Link give their country customers as latest upgrade this version: 1.02b114

http://www.dlink.nl/?go=gNTyP9CnptFMIC4 … C0H9q/8zMK

and in

Germany D-Link offers their customers as latest this version: 1.03B41

http://www.dlink.de/?go=gNTyP9CnptFMIC4 … DJP+lpqg==

Now my question for you:

is the version 1.03b41 for netherland customers a beta version or not?

what are the differents between netherland an german DNS-323 customer datafiles?

I work like tausend other DNS-323 users with actually the version 1.04b82 and it´s close to perfect. Not everything but much better as the version from D-Link USA.

I really appreciate your opinion and feedback!  Thanks, Zen Seeker!!

I just bought the DNS-323, and now I am going to buy the two  Seagate 500GB Serial ATA/300 16MB Buffer ST3500641AS from Frys for $99: http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4697788

I have been reading on fun_plug and now know enough to install it, but I don't see what it actually does... I can't believe I'm asking (n00b/b00b! lol), but... ?

Perhaps this latest firmware support Xbox360 via proper implementation of UPnP? smile

Thanks again!
