Problem connecting a DNS-323 to MAC osx (10.5.1)

Hi,

I've some problems with this device and Mac OSX, even though the drive is connected to the ethernet port, no drive icons appear on the desktop.

I configured/formated it first using a pc and it went smoothly, using the easy search utility. The housing contains two drives and they were formatted separately. (as the device was connected to the pc ethernet adapter directly, I used a crossed cable)

I then set the drive to disable dhcp usage and let it use the 192.168.0.32 default ip.

Then connected it directly to the mac using its ethernet adapter, still with the same crossed cable, but even though the mac adapter is set to a manual address in the same range (192.168.0.xx), no drive icons appeared on the desktop.

I can't access the device's web interface nor ping it on the Mac (at 192.168.0.32).

IP scanner doesn't show it either.

Am I doing something wrong? (I'm a pc user and quite not used to Macs)

Thank you for your help smile

Josh

On the mac do "Go -> Connect to Server"

Type smb://192.168.0.32/Volume_1

Click Connect.

It will not show up because you have no master browser on the network. Its an SMB/CIFS issue. The DNS-323 does not have a wins server enabled.

Re: Problem connecting a DNS-323 to MAC osx (10.5.1)

Frodo, he did say that he couldn't ping the unit so I'm pretty sure that he won't be able to connect to it via ctrl+k. It sounds more like he has a physical network problem to me.
Both my DNS-323s are connected via a switch to various macs and my adsl router. I use dhcp on the router to allocate static ip addresses to the units and everything works well. So until you can ping the device I'd say the you've got network problems to sort out.
when you get it hooked up it does work perfectly well with macs. I have two macs using time machine backing up to one of the units.

Re: Problem connecting a DNS-323 to MAC osx (10.5.1)

Seems so to me too.

Actually to give a bit more info:

That machine has dual ethernet ports, one is connected to a 100mbit switch and works fine.

The dns-323 is directly connected to the other port and that adapter has a manual ip assigned (192.168.0.12). From what I grasped the dns-323 should assign itself a 192.168.0.32 ip, which I should at last be able to ping.

The cable used is working because it is the same I used on the pc to configure and format the dns-323.

Fun fact: when I connect the dns-323 to the 100mbit switch it is then seen by the mac, would there be some reason making it not working when connected directly to the mac?

Additional fun fact: when the dns-323 is connected to the mac directly, the adapter reports packet transfers in both directions, which suggests it "sees" the device.

There is still the possibility that the dns-323 somehow got itself another ip assigned when connected directly to the mac, problem is that the ip scanner I tried doesnt find it. Any idea how I would find out that ip?

My obvious second question would be.

What is the IP and subnet mask you use on the other interface?

The other interface reveives its ip from a dhcp, which I believe uses a 192.168.0.xx range. (during the tests that second interface had a 192.168.0.1xx something ip assigned, while the dns was configured to use .32 and the interface it was connected to used .12).

Hi Joshyy, frodo also asked for your subnet masks on each of the boxes, can you tell us what they are? Hopefully 255.255.255.0.

Re: Problem connecting a DNS-323 to MAC osx (10.5.1)

Sorry about that, the manually assigned port on the mac has a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, yes.

Is that question also valid for the dhcp assigned port? (second port on that machine)

Thanks both of you for your time smile

Re: Problem connecting a DNS-323 to MAC osx (10.5.1)

Have you tried setting the manually assigned adapter to 192.168.1.12 and the DNS-323 to 192.168.1.32?
