starting Twonky

hi all,

i just installed Twonky and the installer said all was OK

after install, i turned off 323 UPnP within web admin console & rebooted

tried going to the twonky config page, but page not found .. did a TOP, and found no mention of twonky

then just tried
/mnt/HD_a2 # starttwonky.sh

but cant find the file ... did a search on this forum, but all explanations are in Linux talk, of which i am not even close to understanding

anyone got a simple easy to explain solution?

also did wiki instructions, but they need updating

cheers

Re: starting Twonky

starttwonky.sh should be in Vol_1 root directory, if its not then the installer did not work properly.

You have installed a Telnet server, haven't you? Twonky needs Telnet to install.

Re: starting Twonky

Dang...I still can't get mine to start.  What firmware ver are you running? the 1.03 or one of the 1.04s?  Did you remove everything from the fun_plug start up script except the telnet start command or did you leave it all as default?  It's got to be something very simple that I'm missing.

I even went and set the chmod on the entire twonky folder to 755 which did finally give me the UDP ports which twonky uses showing up when I ran netstat -l, but I still can't get the server to run on port 9000 (or any other port for that matter)

Re: starting Twonky

all i did was just install it.. it worked after that. i have no idea if it will work after a reboot though. may have to just manually run the .sh script. got no clue how to modify the startup funplug thing to allow twonky to fireup after a reboot.

anyone got a tutorial on that?

Re: starting Twonky

I grabbed the linked version made by Twonky Media for teh DNS-323 from this forum...ran the installer by following the included instructions and it worked fine. I reboot the DNS-323 about once every two weeks, more if testing other add-ons, and it's started on it's own every time. (Unless you pay for a licence you'll need to reboot your DNS-323 once a month to reset the trial timer count-down anyway. I've never had mine up long enough to miss this so I don't know what happens if the trial version expires.)

I've also installed the MIPS version on my HPMediaVault manually and helped dev/test that plug-in. In both cases I found it pretty simple and straight forward.

I did note that on the HPMediaVault turning off the UPnP on the device stopped Twonky from working but this is NOT the case on the 323.

Post what you downloaded to install, where you ran the installer, where it installed to, and we'll start from there. I'm sure it's just a small issue as it's been working fine for a lot of us here.

Re: starting Twonky

I followed the same link for the twonky installer.  Just an FYI, I'm running firmware 1.04B82 on my DNS.  Anyway, I ran the installer from my windows pc which created a twonky folder at /mnt/HD_a2/townky.  There is also a starttwonky.sh in my /mnt/HD_a2 folder.  If I telnet in a manually launch twonky using the starttwonk.sh script, I just see it repeating Twonky Media Server 4.4.3.1 over and over again with a small pause in between each time it repeats.  Trying to call /mnt/HD_a2/twonky/twonkymedia & produces the same results as launching the script.

Re: starting Twonky

I'm just starting my work day but if you guys are still having an issue let me know and I'll post the DL I have. You need the fun_plug installed and working. Don't recall if telnet was needed for this... But in the end the Twonky folder sits in the root of Volume1 and the fun_plug script may need you to add a call to twonky. (Don't recall how much was auto installed or manually tweaked.)

I can check mine and get back to you tomorrow, my time, if you post you still have issues.

Twonky has worked on firmware 1.02 stock, 1.03 stock, 1.04b63 beta and 1.04b82 beta.

Re: starting Twonky

Nope...on reboot, I would just see it sitting in the running process list, but there would be nothing visible on port 9000.  The installer does add the call to starttwonky.sh to the startup script, but I've since removed it, since I haven't been able to get it to run.

Re: starting Twonky

No ones noted which version they are trying or added a link to DL location. I need to compare apples to apples if you want a fix or walk-through.

Re: starting Twonky

I won't be able to check until late tonight or tomorrow but that looks like the right version.

On a long shot...you did change the Twonky script to executable...right? And you didn't open and save/modify anything with notepad? (Adds different characters to the end of file. Use Notepad++ or vi if telneted.)

Re: starting Twonky

Ok...out of complete frustration, I completely deleted everything twonky related from my DNS, redownloaded the install package from Twonky, and re-installed.

Here's where things get wierd.  If I shut off my uPnP server on the DNS, I can't get the twonky config page to load in any browser.  If I turn on the uPnP server, I have to hit refresh a dozon or so times, before I get the initial twonky web page.  Then when I try to go to the config page, it's the same story--hit refresh until it comes up.  I tried doing this in Safari and it is reporting that it's losing the network connection when trying to load certain sub-pages of the twonky configuration.

What would cause it to lose the network connection?  I'm sure whatever this problem is, it's the reason I have to keep refreshing the page to get anything to display at all.

Re: starting Twonky

I was working at a clients until late in the evening so I was not able to test.

Are you conecting to the DNS through a router, switch, hub? Does the model have know issues with packets or maybe frames? Just fishing...

I have the last firmware release v1.04b82 but installed Twonky when I was at v1.03??? When I first bought the drive I moved from firmware to firmware weekly but haven't moved to any release that requires a re-format of the drives since November.

The only other thing I can think of is how your storing the files. I've made a mediashare folder just under Volume1 and Volume2. (Do it from Windows if it makes it easier...I think you can at this level.)

Then I make all my sub folders from there as required. Music, Photos, Movies, Movies-HD, etc. As my HD content is huge I have it on the second drive the the rest on teh first.

Then I go into Twonky and hook it in to each sub folder directly. Photos are searched for only under the sub folder photos and the same for music. I had done the same for movies in the past, with a direct link to the movies branch on each drive, and set the search for video only but found some WMV's would not appear so I changed that to all mead types to resolve the issue.

Other than that it's all by the directions on teh WiKi. (I might have manually made a few files executable but not much more.)

I hate to say it but your connection from the PC to the DNS-323 would be my first stop if I was in your spot and reading the issues as you are.

We can always archive my folder into a tarball....haven't done that it 8 years...and you can use mine as-is...but that's up to you.

Re: starting Twonky

I'm using a WRT54G.  My folder structure is similar to yours.

Actually after some more testing this is what i found.  If I reboot and let twonky autostart, I can't get the web page to come up at all.  If I kill the twonky process and start it manually then I see:

Twonky Media 4.4.3.1

which repeats every few seconds.  It seems that I can get the page to display if I hit refresh right after I see the above line scroll into my terminal window.  So to me, that indicates that twonky is starting, but then almost immediately shutting down for some reason.  If twonky is shutting down, that would explain why Safari was saying it was losing the network connection.  What sucks is that I have no clue how to enable twonky logging.  If I could figure that out, I'm sure we could get to the bottom of this.  There must be something twonky doesn't like which is causing it to shut down.  But what it doesn't like, I have no clue.  Does anyone know how to turn on twonky logging?

Thanks!

Re: starting Twonky

Well I finally got it working...I had to make the following modification:

# contentbase
contentbase=/mnt/HD_a2/Media

It was just set to /mnt

Once I made the change it came right up....very strange...

Re: starting Twonky

Cool, glad you could find the issue. (Don't know why it was pointing at the root of the mount folder but at least it's solved.

Do be aware that any changes to the Twonkymedia-??? (config or INI type file) will not be saved on the next reboot. This is why the 30 day countdown timer and "-1" option don't work...at least on the systems I've installed twonky on. It doesn't scan automatically for new files on the fly but it doesn't expire either...fair trade.

If you need any more help let me know. Archiving and posting isn't that big a deal for me. Others have helped me i the past so I try to pay it forward.

BTW: You ever try DD-WRT since your router supports it? Tried it on a WRT350N but the router wasn't properly supported on DD-WRT yet and the Linksys firmware sucked...had to return it.

Re: starting Twonky

I think I will pay the license fee for twonky so I won't have to worry about the restart issue.

I have another WRT54G running DDWRT.  I use that router as an access point and have my Xbox 360 hooked to it.  So now I stream from my 360 through the wrt54g to my entertainment setup.

The version of DDWRT I installed is probably old by now, but as long as I can use my router as an access point without any issues, I have no reason to change it.   As I get more into media streaming, I'm probably going to look at upgrading all my routers to the -N setup in the near future.  Just have to decide whether to stick with linksys or go to the Belkin routers.   I really like the one that's got the LCD screen on the front!
