So, my WD 500 gig My Book does not work with the DNS-323. Looking at some forums posts here, and other places, it seems like this is a somewhat common issue with this model and Linux (heck, even the latest Ubuntu live cd has some connectivity issues with the drive). I'd really like to chain a (or several) external drives off the DNS, but don't want to buy something that won't work. Can anyone please share what drives they've gotten working with the DNS-323?
Thanks
(By the way, I can get one of my USB thumbdrives to work with the DNS, so I know I have it set up correctly. Mind one, I have another thumb drive that doesn't work, but at least one does).

I've used two USB keys, one was a 512 mini Sandisk. I have also used my NexStar 2.5" enclosure with a 20gig drive. (It's a laptop drive and no external power.)
Both just to test if the add-on was working, haven't applied them since. Although I was wondering if I could use the old 512mb as RAM or something. DD-WRT has a build like that for one of the router images. Anyone think this could be both do-able and useful? I have more than enough devices with USB but letting the DNS-323 use the USB key as runtime memory or even a swap drive would be nice.

You could use it as swap space quite easily, in the same way as you could create a file on the HDDs and use that as additional swap space.
