Just wondering but has any one even been near thinking about trying to get FreeNAS to run on the DNS-323?

You might try to chroot into already installed bsd (so is freenas) from dns-323.

Actually freenas (freebsd) is distributed under BSD license which means source code is available to cross compile
Put practically chrooting into freebsd (freenas) is not worth it.
