Being and IT veteran I was completely oblivious to the fact that most of the new Seagate SATA disks ship with so called compatibility jumper installed, which is well burried inside the connector enclosure. This jumper limits the interface to SATA I speeds.
Remove it and the disk switches to SATA II. I am not sure if the DNS-323 actually supports 3Gbps speeds but it was not protesting so I suppose I may see some perfomance boost!
