Hi,

I really like my 323, but I have now been forecd to move it into a bedroom, and its constant whirring means it has to go. I tried the fan fix, but even with the fan stopped, there is still a humming noise, which I guess must be the disks spinning. (It also used to make a whining/clicking noise every few minutes, but clearing the print folder seems to have stopped that).

Is there an alternative NAS that is completely silent when not in use?

Completely silent NAS device are expen$ive, mostly aimed at the home
theater market. A couple years ago (2006) A-tech made a fanless NAS - NAS4x

But couldn't I get a NAS that completely stops the disk spinning when not in use? It's the constant humming at night that's the problem - not in use. Noise during the day when I'm playing music isn't a problem. If it stopped the disks, then it'd be much quieter, even with a fan spinning.

You could try to shut it down : )
Nah, just kidding. My girlfriend is always complaining that the nas is constantly on consuming power, but turning it off misses the whole point of having a nas.

Anyway, a friend of mine bought a qnap and according to him its really silent with a zalman fancontroller. I dont know if its quiet enough for a bedroom but check it out its a really good nas.
Another option that Im considering myself is to build my own fanless nas using a intel D201GLY2A card and possibly freeNAS.

You say you're building a fanless one. Would that help, as it seems to be the disks that makes the noise and never shut up? With the custom firmware I can switch off the fan, but the noise of the disks is still there. Roll on flash based storage.

I guess I'm confused--if your DNS-323 isn't being accessed at night and you aren't running the UPnP server, then the disks should spin down of their own accord. Mine never spin up unless I'm specifically accessing them. Even if you run fun_plug, you can still have all your addons on a USB key so the disks only spin up when absolutely necessary.

Really? How do I get it to do that? My disks NEVER spin down.

I've removed the funplug, and deleted the .lpd print folder, but it still doesn't ever stop spinnng.

What do I do? I'm on firmware 1.03. Should I upgrade? Will my data be safe?

I have funplug, twonky, lighttpd, fancontrol, backup script as extra's without using an USB key, and my discs spin down nicely and spin up (even seperately) only when accessed.

What firmware are you running?
My disks spin down completely and doesn't make a sound when using 1.04. But when I used FW 1.03 they didn't.

My dns 323 is completely silent, but it took me a grand 4 months to get there. Having a chrooted debian ive tested lots of things until i finally moved everything to a usb stick (which wasnt easy either considering im a medium linux user).

my DNS 323 is also completely silent.
using pwr mgmt and the fan-control script from wiki.

usually after 5 mins the disks and the fan turn off.

if it still does not spin down the disks then there is still
a service, script that is logging to disk?! (i had this issue).
