re: 1.04 firmware and printer issues

Hello,

Sorry for creating a new thread but I think I may have homed on causes of two problems discussed here that come into play only when a printer is connected to the DNS.

The first is failure to spin down.  I found that when I connected the printer, and installed the printer, the printer works fine.  There are no jobs in the queue and all print jobs (only test pages at this stage) print fine.

However, since I connected the printer, the drives would not spin down!

The second problem relates to amber/white light problem. Again the system was working prim and proper till a printer was connected and installed.  Then it started having the "white light" problem on one of its drive.

The relevant entries in dmesg log shows:

Code:

md: md0 stopped.
md: bind<sdb2>
md: bind<sda2>
md: kicking non-fresh sdb2 from array!
md: unbind<sdb2>
md: export_rdev(sdb2)
raid1: raid set md0 active with 1 out of 2 mirrors

Can anyone comment on the MD errors?  What does "non-fresh sdb2" mean?  Any suggestions as to how to manually add this /dev/sda2 back to MD without losing data?

Kind regards,

Jaya

Edit:  I deleted the printer from my computer.  Now even with the printer connected to DNS-323 the drives now spin down.  So it looks like there is something going on between computer and DNS-323 when the printer is installed that prevents it from spinning down the drives.

What type of printer do you have?  Printers these days don't just have a "printer driver" anymore.  Sad, really.  They need to have all the software running that gets status, tells you how much ink is in the printer, whether paper is out.  I'd bet that its all that junk going on in the background that's causing the discs not to spin down.

The printer is Brother MFC-215C.  Yes it is capable of reporting ink levels and so on but I am not using it.  Besides I don't think DNS-323 support features other than job submission and print queue management.

I suspect the DNS-323 is accessing the hidden .lpd directory when servicing such requests even when idle.  Incidentally the status page on DNS-323 always shows in PRINTER INFO, Manufacturer and Product both as "none".  Shouldn't it show something to indicate there is a printer connected?

My DNS-323 reports both the manufacturer and model of my printer correctly on both fw 1.03 & 1.04, so to answer your question - yes, it should, and in my case it does, indicate, not only that a printer is connected, but which printer is connected - please note my fun_plug does not add USB storage functionality, if your does, you might want to briefly disable it and see what happens.

@terry_opie - printers have reported status, albiet limited to on/off line, ever since they were first attached to computers, even before there were "printer drivers" - the early computers used existing "teletypes" as consoles, these predate CRT consoles, which were initially known as "glass teletypes" and would print any character sent over the serial interface.

If you done any programming you might have noticed that several older languages, basic included, use "PRINT" to send text to the display.

My fun_plug is the minimal for TELNET only.  When I plug in the USB cable, I get the following on DNS-323 (dmesg):

Code:

usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using ehci_platform and address 2
drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 2 if 0 alt 0
proto 2 vid 0x04F9 pid 0x0193

However on the status page I get "none" for both Manufacturer and Product.  I suspect it is printer dependent -- that is it depends on whether or not the printer reports information in the format DNS-323 expects upon establishing connection.
