Hi,
I have a DNS-323 currently currently setup in raid1 (2x320G). I used raid1 for the
advantage of redundancy, although I'm now not so sure it is a great idea.
From the readings I made in the forum, I'm concluding it would be more useful to use the DNS as JBOD and having and off-board back-up drive ( which I already have ).
The thing is that I don't really want to modify the setup via the web interface since it forces reformatting of the drives.
Can I safely do it by hand? (I'm a experienced linux user with above (barely) average linux administration knowledge. I think I would mainly requires pointers related to the DNS-323 drive management.

Just bear one thing in mind - with JBOD failure of either drive pretty much guarantees the loss of all your data.
I've heard theories that say when one of the drives in JBOD goes, you lose only the data on that drive, but, in all my simulations, it's been my experience that all the data went.
Why not two standard volumes?
I've found that if you reset the unit using the reset button, it looses the RAID configuration and on the next power up, you'll have two separate volumes, each containing the same data.

your idea sounds good.
Since I'll backup my stuff, jbod or mutiple volumes are quite either useful, but if I want to change drives for bigger ones, having multiple voulmes might be much easier to play with.

I reset the device, and after boot up, the raid was still configured. All other setup were lost though...

Pull the drives and then reset - see if that does it - or pull one drive and format the other.

Just in case you want to go from Raid 1 to Standard, here is the way that I did it. Yes, the thread is titled JBOD but the process I documented is going from Raid 1 to standard.
