Printer configuration on Mac OS X

1. Open the "Printer Setup Utility" program in the /Applications/Utilities folder
2. Select "Add" to add a new printer
3. Printer Browser window will appear - Bring up the advanced configuration by pressing the "alt/option" key while you select "more printers"

4. Select the following:

- device: windows printer via samba
- Device name: anything
- Device URL: smb://<ip address of printer>/lp
- Select printer moder

- click on "add"

that should be it.

Re: Printer configuration on Mac OS X

and with the last point my problem starts. The printer I've installed, HP 7960 doesn't appear in the list of selectable printers...

I can only see it when i connect the printer directly to the USB port of my mac.

Any ideas? Thanks!!

Re: Printer configuration on Mac OS X

You might need to directly configure the Printer on the DNS with CUPS (the linux based printer configuration tool included with mac os x)

- Turn on printer sharing on the mac
- in your browser, enter http://localhost:631
- Take a look at the configuration for the printer when it is connected directly, then create a similar entry for the DNS 323

- The entry I have for my printer is as follows:

Description: HP (Net)
Location: Home Net
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs.
Device URI: smb://192.168.1.2/lp

Re: Printer configuration on Mac OS X

Thanks for the post as it saved me the effort of digging around to figure out the details needed to setup my DNS connected HP printer to OSX.  Works perfectly, but the HP GIMP driver seems to run the printer in high quality mode only, so it is a bit slower than needed, but it works.

Thanks again
David

Re: Printer configuration on Mac OS X

sorry but stil doesn't work for me...
if I use the html interface, I still have to select a printer model and it doesn't show up in the list.
Any idea?

It should work with appletalk. I think the driver from HP is using appletalk...could you explain how to get appletalk on the box?
Thanks
Martin
