Intermittent authentication failures

Here's a strange one...

I'm using SyncBackSE to make a variety of backups from Vista (32-bit) to my DNS-323, accessed as a Windows (UNC) share.  Every now and again - anywhere between 1 in 5 and 1 in 20 - a backup will fail, with SyncBackSE reporting the failure as "Cannot connect to Destination : The specified password is invalid".  I can find no common factor when this happens, Vista logs show nothing else is happening at the time of the failure, no logon (i.e. authentication) alerts, etc.  I'm running firmware 1.03.

Searching the forum, it looks as though I'm the only one experiencing this weird behaviour.  Any clues where I should start looking for a solution?  It's got me stumped  sad

Alan.

Re: Intermittent authentication failures

If all else fails, you can try upgrading to 1.04. It did talk about some fixes involving mapped drives and passwords in Vista. It's not exactly your problem but close enough, I guess...

Re: Intermittent authentication failures

I believe SyncbackSE is the paid version and not the free one right? If so.

1. It should have another function inside the network config area to check a box that says, keep the connection opened something or another. Make sure that is checked.

2. Upgrade to the latest version of SyncBackSE (free download for paid users)

3. Give your DNS a static IP

4. Also make sure you are entering a network ID + password into your SyncBackSE network connection area instead of using the current connection (ie. the one that you used when logging into Windows).

Not sure if these will 100% help but they all go towards making a sturdier connection for the backup process.

Re: Intermittent authentication failures

mealto,

Yes, SyncBackSE is the paid version.  Thanks for the suggestions, but:

1.  I already have the "Do not disconnect from the network after the profile has run" option checked
2.  I am running the latest version (4.3.2.1)
3.  My DNS-323 uses a static IP
4.  I am using a specific userid & password in Syncback's Network options

blahsome,

I believe (OK, I'm guessing) that the Vista password issue resolved with firmware 1.04 is to do with Vista's use of NTLMv2 authentication:

  http://www.builderau.com.au/blogs/codem … =339270746

I suspect that the new firmware upgrades Samba to v3.0 to enable authentication from Vista without requiring this change (which I had to do to get my backups working on Vista in the first place).  But if all else fails, I'll give the firmware upgrade a try.  I'm also talking to the Syncback folks.

Thanks for the suggestions - if anyone else has any more ideas, please post them here!  Thanks...

Re: Intermittent authentication failures

Another suggestion is to upgrade to Vista SP1. smile

Ah, there's always a comedian, isn't there?  smile

That's on the to-do list also - some way down it, I might add wink

Re: Intermittent authentication failures

Well, just to inspire you ...

I installed SP1 (using the single downloaded executable) and the only difference that I've noticed is ~30% faster reading from my DNS323 (now almost 17 MB/sec transferring a single 2GB file).

I run 64-bit Vista and connect to the DNS323 via a gigabit NIC and switch.

The install was pretty smooth - I just set the upgrade off and went to bed, and it was ready for me in the morning. (I've heard it takes over an hour.)

Regarding intermittent connections, I had a similar problem, but different I think.

Sometimes I would get a "Failed to connect", but not because of a bad password, but because my DNS323 couldn't be found on the network.

My network did not have a proper DNS (name server!) configured, so DHCP clients got an IP number but that number couldn't be looked up by server name, and also the clients weren't given a domain name.

Regardless of that, the DNS323 could *usually* be found by name "nas1", but sometimes disappeared. (Some kind of intermittent Samba magic, I guess.)

My problems went away after I got the DNS (domain name server) issues fixed by upgrading my ADSL router firmware and configuring it properly so that hostnames can be looked up.

Re: Intermittent authentication failures

Hmmmm... well, maybe I'll give it a go - after taking a backup first  smile

Are there any logs on the DNS-323 which might help in tracking down this problem (assuming it's not a problem with Vista or SyncBackSE)?  I haven't played around with the funplug stuff, but will do so if it gives me access to data which might help debug the problem.
