I am looking into getting a DNS-323, and I'm trying to decide how to proceed, as I am on a budget. I'm thinking of getting the DNS and a single drive to start. I would prefer to use JBOD over standard, but I'm not clear if I would be able to just add Drive #2 in later, and have JBOD setup w/o having to reformat the older drive. Has anyone gone this route?
I don't think it will really affect my decision to get the DNS, just the size of the disk I get along with
Thanks

With a single drive you cannot configure the unit for JBOD and when you add a second drive, if you select JBOD it will reformat both drives.
Why do you feel you would prefer JBOD over standard disks?
On this device JBOD spans or concatenates the physical disks in to a single large volume, it will put data on the first disk and when that is full, put data on the second disk - in theory, if a disk fails the data that is on the other disk will remain available, in my experience, this doesn't happen - if a disk fails - ALL the data is lost.

I would prefer one large disk, but it's not really an issue if it won't work with my budget. My main preference is non-RAID, due to the overhead(it's fine for work, because I don't pay for the disks )
That definitely answered my question, Thanks!
Now, off to convince my wife that this is a good idea.... I have a feeling the printer function is the only thing that will save me there!
