Sporadic delays when accessing files and folders on shares over networ

I have owned my DNS-323 for over a year and have always experienced a slight (3-5 seconds) sporadic (doesn't happen all of the time) delay in file and folder access from my Vista desktop and Vista laptop to the shares on my DNS-323.  It didn't bother me.

Recently I have added an XP file server to my Gigabit ethernet home network and now this sporadic delay is no longer sporadic.  It happens almost every time I access a DNS-323 share (folder or file) with multiple computers (XP and Vista).

My first thoughts are that the drives are starting to go bad (they run hot because of limited cooling in my network closet).

Has anyone else experienced this sporadic access delay?  Oh BTW - I use two 500GB (JBOD) Western Digital HDs (Cheapies from Frys).

Also, since one drive had only about 90GB left, I deleted about 50GB of worthless files off of one drive and it didn't make a difference.

Are my disks spinning down sporadically for some reason?
