USB disk disappears a few minutes after mounting

Hey

I've bought a 4gig usb stick to use when downloading torrents to avoid having the disks running all times..

however when i've mounted the disk on /mnt/usb and started the bt client (transmission) the drive suddenly disappears...

when the drive works it appears as /dev/sdc1 but after the "crash" its nowhere to be found (using fdisk -l or cat /proc/partitions) but the drive is still mounted??

it doesn't help to rmmod usb-storage and reinserting it...


does anyone have any idea what could cause the trouble??

by the way i formatted the disk as ext2 using mke2fs...

If you start the bt client (transmission), and configure transmission to
use the hard drive instead of the USB drive, does the USB drive still
disappear?

I'm trying to see if the USB problem is caused by simply executing the transmission
process or only when transmission is configured to write to the USB drive.

no, when i don't read/write to the usb disk it won't disappear (at least not yet smile ) the drive usually disappears after a few minutes of "heavy"/continous writing to the disk...

i managed to get a snapshot of the dmesg output right after a crash..: (the interesting part is found in the lower part of the log...

the way i see it it starts out by having trouble writing to the disk and eventually the disk disappears?

as mentioned i formatted the disk from fat32 to ext2 as i though that was "better" - could i have done anything wrong (or not done) to cause this malfunction?

EDIT: i just did an fdisk -l to see the drive info when i noticed that the system value is read as "Win95 FAT32".. weird?

Did you just format the the USB stick mke2fs, or did you use fdisk to make a linux partition?  It looks like you tried formatting a FAT 32 partition to ext2, and that will not work.  Try going back in with fdisk and erasing the partition.  Then create a new linux partition and then format it with mke2fs.

Are you sure the flash drive is capable enough to survive the access pattern of P2P? Last I check, P2P exerts a tremendous strain on the hard drive depending on implementation.

But when talking access patterns and flash memory disks - isn't that to avoid physical wear?

just in case anyone else is searching all over this forum for a solution to a problem with mounting usb-disk, here is what I ran into (and the solution was in this thread)

root@DNS-323:/mnt/HD_a2/ffp/start# sh usbdisk.sh start
Waiting for sdc1 (up to 60 seconds) ...
Mounting /dev/sdc1 on /mnt/HD_a2/sdc1
Failed
mount: mounting /dev/sdc1 on /mnt/HD_a2/sdc1 failed: Invalid argument

the problem I had done was running mke2fs and fdisk in the wrong order!
From reading this thread a little bit too sloppy, I ran mke2fs on my USB stick to reformat it and then ran fdisk to create a partition. Which ofcourse required a new format. So by running fdisk first followed by mke2fs, I finally managed to mount my USB stick
