Put USB HDD to sleep when inactive ?

Hi,

I have connected a USB HDD to my DNS323 and I want to put it to sleep when inactive (it's accessed once or twice a day...)

hdparm won't do it and dns323-spindown works only for the internal HDDs.

I am using fonz fun_plug package, is there a tool which I can use? Could't see a useable.

Thanks wink

Re: Put USB HDD to sleep when inactive ?

Most USB enclosures use a USB->SATA chip which doesn't support the power saving modes for the hard drive.  If it does happen to support the feature, you'll have to configure the USB HDD using the tools they provided when you purchased it.

Re: Put USB HDD to sleep when inactive ?

Well, my chipset supports power saving if it gets the command to do so. big_smile

The OS has to put it into sleep. I've read that sg3-utils can do this with my chipset, but I want an automatic way...

thanks

I am trying to understand (and may be start by fiddling with) spin down parameters.  I saw you mention hdparm -- mind providing a hint as to where I should start looking?  PM is fine if the forum is not appropriate to go into this.

PS:  My experience with 'fail to spin-down' kind of problems so far has been attributable to something other than a problem with the DNS-323 1.04 firmware -- if your disks do not spin down it is most likely because you have other hosts on the network trying to access your DNS-323.

Megabug - what enclosure are you using? I would like to buy one with that chipset.

Thanks

Re: Put USB HDD to sleep when inactive ?

Hi,

Chipset is the SPIF225A

@jayas
Well, hdparm won't work because the hdd isn't IDE... wink currently forgot how the sdx tool was named...
