Hard drives disapearing with no reason.

Hello,

I got a wierd problem with my 323. I have two seagate 500 MB (ST3500841AS) drives, using 250 GB with RAID 1 and the remaining with JBOD. I updated to 1.04 from the beginning (a few weeks ago). All worked pretty well.
This morning, without any reason, I couldn't connect to the NAS (I use XP or 2000). So I tried to check what could have changed, but I only accessed the disk a week ago. The only thing I did is pluging an other PC on the network and borrow the network cable of the nas for a moment. If this is the cause the drive failure, it's not a very reliable device...

The drive leds blinks blue continuously. When entering into the configuration, the NAS reports 0 drives installed. I tried to remove and put them back without any changes. From the configuration page, I asked for a reboot (instead of shuttnig down from the NAS directly). One of the volume (the RAID one) came back, but empty. But, it dispeared again after a shutdown and power up.
I tried the disks into a windows machine and they are working. I could see all partitions even if I obviously can not go inside. I tried an other disk into the NAS, a Hitachi Deskstar 80 GB. The disk led is not blinking continuously. When entering to the configuration page, the NAS asks for formating it, but I have to keep the data, so I skip this page to go to the main menu. If I try to get information, the NAS does not respond. Even a ping doesn't get an answer.
I resetted the system which goes back to version 1.03, but nothing has changed. The disks blinks continuously in blue and none of them are recognized.

I don't do any operation on the NAS. It is plugged on a battery backup, so there were no power supply problem.I never nuplug it directly and always use the switch in the front panel. I have 200 GB of data inside and I'm very very worried with that... The two disks gives exactly the same symptoms, if one of them is used or both.

What can I do to get information or a wait to reset or test something ? I searched here, but I couldn't find any similar problem.

Many many thanks in advance,

Jerome

Re: Hard drives disapearing with no reason.

You appear to have the capability to connect the drives to another system - use ext2IFS (http://www.fs-driver.org/) to get your data off.

Lesson #1 - YOU and YOU alone are responsible for your data, if you value it, BACK IT UP, RAID1 is not a form of backup.

I can't tell you why your NAS should think your drives are defective or missing, but I can tell you that under normal circumstances, this unit can be considered as reliable and no borrowing the ethernet cable should not cause drive issues - I've moved mine from network to network, and generally used it in very unNAS like fashion with very few hiccups, something strange has happened in your case, especially since you mention that you upgraded to 1.04 and when reset the system went back to version 1.03

One caution - don't assume that because it's plugged into a "battery backup" there was no power supply problem - those devices come in different designs and of different quality (personally - if the maker describes it as a "battery backup" I wouldn't even use it - but that's just me)
