Newbie Questions!!!

Thanks for the help so far. I have my DNS 323 installed, and I have 2 750G, one in each side, as a couple of disks only (No RAID or JBOD). Volume 1 is my music in lossless format (250 G), and also has my "degraded" (128 bit) music for iPhone sync. Disk 2 is video rips (500G).

1) My thought is to add a second DNS 323 (or successor) when the 1TB or larger HDs are abit moire affordable (or when the DNS 323-2 will stack 4 disks), and increase my Video storage at that time. I HOPE to get the second NAS unit up, copy the Videos from NAS 1 volume 2 over to NAS 2 (as a RAID 1 device), then make the first 323 a RAID 1 array (that is mirrored, right?). Will it do this w/o destroying the existing data on volume 1? That is, can I just change the configuration, and it will copy what is on NAS 1 Volume 1 into the RAID on NAS1? Or, when setting up a RAID, does it format both drives?

2) Having problems with different addresses. I copied my iTunes music over, and the path is "M : //Volume_1_Music/*". I then had WMP find the music, but it's path is "\\NAS\Volume_1\Music\*"- they are the same place, but slightly different paths. When I moved the iTunes, I just has iTunes "consolidate" the library, so I would not loose any playlists or anything. Cool. Then I pointed WMP to find the new place for music, but it will not allow me to put "M : / /" in there. The reason I want to do this is I use a program (great shareware, BTW, give the author some $$ if you find it good- called MusicBridge) to copy playlists and such from iTunes to WMP- keeps them in Sync. But when it tried to copy the playlists, the paths do not match, so it cannot copy. I NEED WMP to work becauseit is what drives music shown in Media Center... Am I going to have to rebuild my playlists by hand? (I hope not!)

3) Every time I power up my Vista computer, it asks runs "Found New Hardware" and wants to find drivers. The DNS-323 seems to run fine w/o installing any drivers, and when I have windows search for drivers, it cannot find any drivers (on the Internet or on the DLink CD in the drive). Should I just check the "Do Not Bother me With This Again" box, or is there something I should add? I did not find any drivers on the DLink site- just firmware.

Thanks!

Dave

Re: Newbie Questions!!!

q1) With the stock D-Link firmware can NOT switch from single drive to RAID1 (mirror)
array, without re-formating the disks.  You will have to backup and restore your data if
you want to go from single to RAID1 array.

EDIT: 6/08 D-Link firmware v1.05 does provide the capability to switch from single drive
to RAID1 (mirror) without reformatting - (caution, I haven't tried this feature myself)
