User Permission Confusion

Just configured my new 323, upgraded firmware to 1.05, no mods straight box. I go into the gui and create my users. I go into Network Access and change the default Volume_1 to just read for everyone. I work though the gui to create folders for each user and grant them read/write. So I have user1, user2, user3 under the root of Volume_1.  So I browse to the DNS name \\nasz I see all the shares (user1,user2, user3 and Volume_1).  Here's where it gets weird.

If I navigate to the share \\nasz\user2 I have full access. I can create folders and files even though I'm not user2. If I browse to the folder via \\nasz\Volume_1\user2 then I can't create.

I want to setup individual folders that only specific users have access to read/write

Code:

+ Volume_1 <- Everyone has Read
  + User1 <- User1 has R/W
  + User2 <- User2 has R/W
  + User3 <- User3 has R/W

What am I doing wrong? I can't seem to change the permissions on the shares via XP.

Windows XP sp3 in workgroup
Raid 1
Thanks

Re: User Permission Confusion

By going through \Volume_1\user2, you are in the share "Volume_1" and the subdirectory "user2".  Since everyone only has Read Only access to share "Volume_1", you will only have Read Only when in any subdirectory of that share.

As for conecting to directly to User2 even though you are not, did you set a password for user2?  If you did not, or the password is the same as your login password, XP will send that and allow you access, even if you are not that user (because passwords match).  Also, if you have set yourself up in a group, or have given yourself a login / password that has read/write root access, you may be be able to log into and write to shares not belonging to you, as you are an "administrator."

From XP, you cannot change the permissions because you do not have that permission on the unit as a user.  You need to set permissions on the unit via the web utility, or directly via fun_plug.  It can also be done via the backup file, but I do not recommend this as you can very easily damage the unit beyond easy repair.  This usually happens when the file is edited in Windows, as it adds CR/LF to the end of each line, which is not compatible with Linux.

Re: User Permission Confusion

Hi,

I have exactly the same thing since I've upgraded my DNS-323 to firmware 1.05. As far as I remember I didn't have this issue as long as I was using firmware 1.03 (that lasted about 3 hours). Basically I have user1 and user2 with the same password on the NAS as used to login to Win XP machines.
On the NAS I have a share called "Users" where all members of the group called "Users" have only read access. Then there are separate rules (and shares) that defines access for each user to his/her own home directory. user1 has r/w access to \\NAS\User1 and user2 has r/w access to \\NAS\User2.
In this example both user1 and user2 have r/w to \\NAS\User1 and \\NAS\User2. When I tried to make a similar situation but with share names different that the real user names, everything worked fine and users only had r/w access to their own home dir.

After reading these posts I changed the password of user2 and the problem was gone ...

To come back now to above posts, to be honnest I don't think this is only because of both users having the same password that permissions are getting mixed up. And as I said before, while still running firmware 1.03 I didn't have this issue.

Could this be a bug in the system or am I not getting something right?
