Short question before buying...

Hi,

I only found an incomplete thread about this subject so I'm asking:

Is it possible to configure an usb wireless dongle with the dns-323. I know that speed will not be overwhelming but, still I have my reasons...
Are there any wireless modules built into the default kernel?

thank you.

Re: Short question before buying...

Anything can be done, but why would anyone want to do this?  If yo want wireless on this thing connect it to a DWL-G730AP.  It will even power from the USB port.  I have one I keep with my notebook computer at al times.

Re: Short question before buying...

sorry but that's not helpful... basically you are saying that I don't want to do this... smile

I know that anything can be made, and I know other sollutions exist... I was wondering how hard this particular solution I was aiming for is (because I am an adept of less cluter - which one dongle vs. one ap with ethernet cable and power brick - because i understood from this forum the usb port on the dns is underpowered - is) vs buying a more expensive thecus 2100 box which allows for mini-pci cards and usb dongles....

thank you

Re: Short question before buying...

You are right, I am pretty much saying that you do not want to do this.  A few other people have inquired about it in the past and unless you are willing to write the modules and drivers, then you are out of luck.

The solution I gave you above actually provides less bulk than a USB wireless stick.  The unit is only about 2.5 inches by 3 inches and can easily be velcroed to the top of the DNS.  There is no power brick to deal with as it will power from the USB port (the DNS has more than enough USB power - the underpower issue comes from people running USB powered harddrives).  That along with a 6 inch patch cable and it it done.  A flat compact patch cable even comes with the unit.

It's your choice.
