Trigger built-in (admin) BitTorrent via FTP or another WebGUI?

Hi all!

I currently have the D-Link admin exposed to the internet to be able to add/monitor BitTorrent files. This doesn't feel that secure though. I would like to block that port in my router again. The problem then is that I need to find another way to manage BitTorrent files. Is there any way to trigger a download by adding a .torrent file to a folder via FTP? Is there another WebGUI I could use? Am I on the wrong path entirely and should look into installing another torrent app? If so, any recommendations among those out there like MLDonkey?

Kind Regards
Deas

I believe having secured access to your home network is the ultimate question here.

One silver bullet to many security-related questions is a VPN solution such as OpenVPN, supported by some routers. For example, third party firmware has supported OpenVPN for the popular WRT54G(L) router for a long time. Even the DNS-323 itself has an OpenVPN package, I believe.

Neither is easy to set up, however.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, VPN would be a solution to access the DSN securely, but setting up a VPN only to be able to add torrents feels a bit over the top I think. Also, I would like as easy access as possible to the BitTorrent monitor, without the need to configure a VPN setup on all computers I use.

Re: Trigger built-in (admin) BitTorrent via FTP or another WebGUI?

How is your DNS admin currently exposed to the Internet? If it's through port-forwarding, many routers allow you to change the external port that gets forwarded to the DNS-323's port 80. You can assign a random port above 1024, for example. Most hackers won't port-scan all available ports.

If your router allows remote administration through HTTPS, you can also enable that. Then every time you want to remotely administer BitTorrent, just open the port, add the torrent, and close the port. A little cumbersome but otherwise requires no complex setup.

I did solve it by installing Transmission + Clutch and added password protection to the clutch site.
