DNS-323 extra cooling!

One week ago I bought this great thing (DNS-323) and installed 2 new WD1000FYPS in RAID1 configuration.
But system was overheated due to very little cooler...
System temperature was 120F and HDDs SMART showed 47C for both Green Power drives!

I've removed front panel, 4 screws and metal plate. Then inserted 2 dsub female screwlocks and placed Titan HDD cooler

Cooler powered by 12V DC adaptor, fans connected sequentially and therefore have a low noice.
Warranty was not affected!

What I have now (room temperature 28C):

/ # smartctl -d marvell -A /dev/sdb
194 Temperature_Celsius     0x0022   116   106   000    Old_age   Always       -       36

/ # temperature g 0
Temperature type : Fahrenheit
<temperaturertc>: get temperature = 102

Re: DNS-323 extra cooling!

Out of curiosity, how is he going to power 12V fans off a 5V USB without a DC-DC converter?  Or do you want them to runn at half speed?

Re: DNS-323 extra cooling!

USB is 5V, but fans works. Not in full rpms, but enought for cooling.

Re: DNS-323 extra cooling!

Removing the front from my CH3SNAS will also lower the temperature. Tests showed that during extensive copying (6hours) from Volume_1 to Volume_2 the temperature dropped from 47 C to 43 C after I removed the front panel (roomtemp@27 C). You can also feel with your hand that the airflow at the back of the unit increases when you remove  the front panel. The only disadvantage is that the noise increases.

Re: DNS-323 extra cooling!

I understand the CH3NAS is similar tothe DNS, but on the DNS, mine increase in temperature when the front cover is removed.  There is a thread on here somewhere, that other people have had the same increase in temperatur with the cover off.

Re: DNS-323 extra cooling!

The DNS and CH3SNAS are not similar in case design. As far as I've seen the DNS has a different disks ejection system. The DNS has levers in the back while the CH3SNAS has them between the disks. I don't know about other differences, especially ventilation holes but I can say that my CH3SNAS runs much cooler with the front panel open.
